An expression pedal perhaps?

Post

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I had no idea this forum is so active even in old treads. Special thanks to everyone who prevented this to be hijacked in the old "do you not know how to do the basic audio fade" theme. I do know how to do the audio fade, but this time different solution is needed because the whole set is routed out by 8ch audio interface going to the FOH guy and fade needs to be able to happen in any given moment of the song in case something goes wrong. so there is no way to automate an envelope or create it beforehand. The simplest solution would be if Reaper would allow to extend the built-in "Add tiny fade out on Playback stop", but since that is not the case - I'll be looking into third-party scripts and other ideas you suggested. Thank you.

Or bounce the whole mix and drag the fadeout envelope over the clip to the place you want the fadeout to start. Unless your clips end at the same time and you can simply select all of them before dragging one of the fadeout handles.

Otherwise, a plugin that fully models an SSL Buss should have an auto-fadeout button for this very purpose.
Everyone knows how to do fade outs in-DAW. The previous poster who ressurrected this thread was asking about in real time with a single midi trigger. I understand this use case because you can often be juggling a lot of stuff live on stage - and simplifying a certain process means one less thing that can go wrong. This is why I upgraded my Ditto looper pedal to a Boss looper that does automatic fade-outs with a single footswitch press - so much easier and 100% hands free.

Surprised there isn't a simple solution ITB for this for live performers.

Midi assignable fadeout plugin, anyone?!?!
This is why I also suggested something that emulates an SSL buss automatic fade out - there must be plugins that provide such functionality.

I'd be surprised if Reaper doesn't have such a thing. Could probably be written easily enough or done really easily using a live DSP environment like Reaktor, Max, etc.

I'm sure someone will have written a script for this kind of thing - if you check the Reaper forums.

Brilliant thinking, there is infact a plugin that does that SSL fade thing...

From the manual:
Auto Fade
When pressing Auto Fade, you will note the LED button pulsating slowly,
this means your signal is fading out at your set ‘Rate • s’ (5) time. The
Fade Out is completed once the pulsating LED stagnates. When pressing
again, an Auto Fade In starts with the LED button pulsating faster, this
means your signal is fading in at your set ‘Rate • s’ time (5). The Fade In is
completed once the pulsating LED stagnates.

5 Rate ∙ s
Sets the Auto Fade (3) duration. Variable from 1 to 60 second

With your DAW you should be able to set up midi triggering of that button pretty easily. That could indeed be an elegant, single-press solution.

It surprised me that SSL's own emulation does not have that feature at present. Looks like Brainworx outdid the official release in terms of authentic functionality.

The Reaper Forum post that I linked to in my previous post has a script for this though it is triggered by MIDI note and not a CC.

Then this: https://forums.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=116576 will generate a note on/off from CC. It wouldn't be as elegant as incorporating such functionality in the previous script but if the user isn't into coding this might suffice as a workaround.
