And how old was your Dell gaming machine? because all the benchmarks suggest your M1 MacBook is not as fast as a 12th Gen Intel powered laptop. But a tleast they've put a few more ports in the Apple machines, so they are slightly less useless than they were.

yup, purely by benchmarks, an M1 Pro/Max is roughly comparable to a 12th gen (meaning current 2022 edition) i5.
still completely happy with mine, as nowadays a good portion of comparable Windows laptops are in the same price bracket nowadays anyways and you can even find worse ones for more :o but this thing is dead silent unless you're simultaneously pushing both the CPU and GPU to the max and has superior battery life.

fyi, because of this thread i did get a pc laptop a few months ago for more than my price range but hopefully it will last awhile as at the time it was fairly current. just wanted to say thanks to all of you who helped with your inputs.

So it's not "dead silent" any more than anyone else's laptop. Oh, and according to figures I've seen (Engadget reviews), it's battery life is no better than similarly priced PC laptops. Mine, for example, got 20 hours on a rundown test I saw on a YT review. The M1 MB Air is very good, right up with the best, but it's not actually the best.

It's "dead silent" in the sense that even when the fans kick in it's still barely hearable.
And I mean the MacBook Pro of course, because that's the one with the fan and the one I can say anything about 8)

If you have space for a tower, get a tower.

Anybody can make space for a tower if that's what they're going for. I don't believe that's really a matter of available space :hihi:

From what I've gathered this can only be achieved on the Zenbook by disabling a lot of stuff to the point it gets almost unusable. While the Macbook does the same feat by default.
Another point almost never gets mentioned is that a Mac doesn't have any preference if you're using it powered or running out the battery. The performance is always the same.
I remember juggling settings around what to sacrifice while on battery while using the XPS....

Having the same power available plugged and unplugged was no problem on Win 7 for me, but the battery life suffered badly

I mean, if you're living in a cramped apartment doing nightly DJ gigs and moving every year, you don't really want a tower. If space isn't a main concern: get a freaking tower. It will last longer, is upgradable, has more options when something malfunctions, etc. I have two laptops only because I have very limited space and move frequently.

I also had the mindset of having a "tower" at home and a notebook for travel.
It vanquished when I got the M1 MacBook. It IS my travelmate and also my desktop computer once it is docked to its docking station. it IS my freaking computer on a big screen, mouse and keyboard.
How technology has grown over the years... it's almost like magic

I blew out two of the USB ports in one of my laptops. It's a $300+ fix plus labor. On a tower, not only could you potentially have enough to spare in the first place, but you'd just need a $30 PCI board to plug in for more ports.

Wrong power adapter for external Blu-ray drive. I'm lucky the motherboard was smart enough to shut things down before I did further damage to it. Anything USB with external power (even a hidden battery) has the potential to fry your entire PC.
