Thinking of buying myself one of these. Has anybody heard or played one? Any alternative suggestions (in the same / similar price range). It's just to noodle around on.

Thanks,

Rob.

Hmmm ... In that sort of pricerange, you won't get a particularly remarkable build quality, and especially with the preamp part of the price is going to be for the preamp rather than the build quality of the guitar, but if it's just for noodling rather than recording seriously with, it probably won't be that much of a problem. Just keep in mind that I've noticed cheap guitars with preamps as standard tend to have lousy intonation (ie. it goes out of tune the further up the neck you go, and it's not that easy or cheap to fix). See if you can play one or get someone who actually plays guitar to have a go with one and see if it's any good, if you can, otherwise you might end up splashing out on something completely rubbish. Good luck ... :)

Thanks V. Yeah, I was planning to play before I bought. Figured since it's of Ovation parentage it shouldn't be too sucky. Thanks for your help.

I could never get into playing ovations; that rounded back just felt too awkward to be holding. some of them were damn gorgeous though! How does it feel when you play it, and how does it sound to you?

Ovation is a great guitar. That price is about 1/3rd of what I paid for my Ovation look-alike. Go for it man.

If you have not heard one yet, take a listen first. The Ovation has a very distinct sound which may or may not go to your taste. Most often suited for life shows IMHO, but can sound good on recordings too. Famous Ovation users include Santana, Page and others.

I think that's what worries me a bit - do I just want it for the percieved name? I must admit I've had a soft spot for Ovations since I saw a Breadwinner in a catalogue when I was a kid!

Still, no horror stories, so I'll do as you guys say, try it, and if I like it, buy it.

Thanks again.
