Miami Vice - Crockett's theme synth pad

Hi folks,

How to get this warm pad you can hear in this old 80's song from Jan Hammer? I need it as close as possible. My available synths are:

- Zebra2
- OP-X Pro II
- Sylenth1
- Absynth 5 (I don't think that this synth is suitable, though)
- the complete Korg collection (M1, MS-20, MonoPoly, Wavestation, Polysix)

So if somebody knows one ore more of these synths and is proficient in sound design, please help, because I'm not.

What is this recording? It's not Hammer's.

But the pad sounds very similar anayway. I know Jan used a memorymoog for a lot of his string sounds at that time, but I'm not sure whether that's what was used for Crockett's Theme. However, if you want to know exactly what keyboard was used, the best place to ask is over at

Well, as far as I know this is one of the original versions. During the time he made different versions of this track, using different synthesizers. But for the first release of this song I think you're right, he used a Memorymoog AFAIK.

I just found out that in one of his versions a Korg T3 had been used, played by ... Jordan Rudess. So my M1 VST should be able to create this sound. But it's questionable whether I'm able to create it. I should spend some more time learning sound programming.

Don't know what the keyboardist is exactly using but I know he has a stack of keyboards when they play live.

Even if it's not Jan Hammer's exact version it might give you a different perspective on how to approach it.

Just pick your poison and tweak until it's close enough for your needs. Well over 50% of all synths on the market have a usable bread & butter string patch for this type of work. Analyse the timbre and envelopes.

Often it's not about the synth or patch itself but how it's played and used.

I just tripped over this thread. I had a try with Surge (v1.8, but it's two major releases beyond that now).
(2:45) jumps to where you can get a quick overall feel.
