A new, but old computer for me.

I am looking for a new computer for my vsts and DAWs:)

Is is supposed to bee NOT the newest and and most up to date hardware.
Its like buing some new jeans.
I want something with a very good tech inside, but for budget reasons, not the newst model, but the model that was new last summer or the summer bevor the last summer, you know what I mean.

What would be a good choice for a mashine to use Software like Renoise, Studio One 5 and so one to make music.

My mashine needs houres to start and I just cant find the problem.
Have tryed everything I found in the web to make it start faster, but.........it takes ......ages.

My be someone has an idea to handle that also, or just this problem.
It was fast, once I bought it.

Regarding speed, if it's still got hard drives then swapping your system drive for a SSD does wonders, couldn't believe how quick my old laptop boots now with an SSD. Reinstalling Windows often helps though can be a chore if you have a lot to then reinstall...

I know you were thinking older model.

But the new Intel Core i5-12600K and 1200KF has more cores (10), and is faster in single core and multi core benchmarks than you're much older i7 CPU. In other words, you don't have to get an Intel i7 to get an improvement. Might want to look for machines with it.

Indeed, plenty fast enough to do a lot of stuff. I still use an i7 4770 for desktop and an 17-3740 for laptop, andd an average song probably uses about 25-30 tracks of audio, a few VSTis for drums and strings etc, and shitloads (over 100... ) of various effects. These older machines are still no slouch unless you're trying to run really demanding projects with huge amounts of vstis etc. For averagely complex stuff you should still be fine.

I'd echo the advice to (after a backup...) try reinstalling windows, and if you haven't got an SSD as your C: drive then do so - the difference is huge!

If you don't already have your OS on a SSD your current build would improve alot. You would be wise to avoid any SSD with no buffer/cache.

I would say you can't go wrong with either the Crucial MX500 or Samsung 850/860/870 EVO models NOT the QVO models... however Crucial MX500 1TB is my personal bang for the buck favorite unless Samsung is cheaper, I have bunch of both. I would suspect that the 1TB versions are the best priced when it comes to price per GB and they also performe a bit better than the smaller sizes due to larger cache/buffer.

If you can afford 2 SSDs I would dedicate one for windows, if its bigger than 250GB I would make it a dual partition. 250GB for OS and use the other partition for general archive/storage and use the second SSD for work projects.


Crucial has in general been priced lower than Samsung and there's really not worth getting anything cheaper IMO...the difference in price vs performance makes no sense so it's better to wait and save up those last pennies if needed.

Anyone else suggest any other SSD model with no buffer will have to fight me in KVR dark web section.
