Tell me about your touchscreen setup. Pros/cons and what you did to overcome any limitations

Thinking about getting a touchscreen.

i went around in circles for a while, considering the Slate Raven, or some huge 27" touchscreen...
Long story short, I bought a Viewsonic VG1655, which just connects to my macbook via a single usb c cable.
The screen is tough, and big enough for most applications.
The only negative so far for this particular screen is that it needs to be pretty much on 100% brightness or it makes a very faint high pitched coil whine type noise. I used it for ages on about 13% brightness which was perfect for night time use, and maybe i didn't notice the whine because i always had the speakers up, or maybe my unit is a dud

Overall, I'm glad i didn't invest in a Slate Raven. My regret is that i didn't buy the SSL UF8 when i had the money. I think touchscreens are great for general use, internet browsing especially. For audio, they're fun to use for parametric EQs, tweaking plugins a bit, and do I have my Cubase mixer on the VG1655 which is handy for adjustments here and there... but it's not really possible to just reach for a fader per-se, you really have to look at the screen while you make contact, make sure you have contact on the correct area of the screen, THEN move the fader... your mileage may vary on what you want to use it for, but for faders & knobs and such, i think i'll always prefer hardware.

I do like to use it for writing ideas in Sundog Studio though, makes things a bit quicker and feels a bit like an iPad i guess. Some functions can be a bit fiddly though.

They're fairly cheap, and work with Windows and MacOS, i'd recommend the VG1655.
If you like the workflow, then you can always upgrade to a 27" model.

I recently upgraded my laptop and last weekend I took it away with me. I was using the touchscreen for the first time with the machine and the experience was brilliant. As in as good as using an iPad brilliant. I'm not sure why, maybe the touchscreen was better/more responsive or maybe Windows 11 is just way better with touch but the experience really was amazingly good. So good that I probably won't bother carrying a mouse with me in future on those kinds of trips.

Zenbook Duo, yes. Working on the main screen. My old one only has touch on the little screen but this one has it on both.

Wait the new zenbooks have TWO touchscreens? What daw did you settle on?

Yes, the UX482 has touch on both screens. I use it with Studio One. I detach the Piano Roll, move it onto the lower screen and maximise it. That way I can see all the important things at once -

My personal experience with touchscreens is that it's essential to have the best quality screen possible. If you get a touch screen of lower quality you will quickly get annoyed with the screen not reacting the way you want. I never used computer touch screens, but a handful of synths with touch screens, like the newer Akais (Live, MPC X, Force) and the Pioneer SP-thingy. They were absolutely awful and you had to try to grab the parameters multiple times before they are under your control. I tried using touch screen pencils too, but that didn't improve much. High quality screens like the iPads are much more pleasant to work with.

So in my experience - don't cheap out on the quality of the screen.

Studio One. I have Cubase, too, but I haven't installed it because I only ever use it to convert stuff my bandmate sends me, and he hasn't sent me anything in ages.

I love it. The touch experience is great if you are using the right DAW and plugins. Anything with Juce tends to work multi-touch and some others. I use Bitwig which is also multitouch. Things that aren't multi-touch can also be ok with touch, but I do also have a Surface Dial with Elephant which is great in combination with touch. Touch the control on screen, then do fine adjustments with the dial.

So you end up with the combination of mouse, touch and dial, plus controllers. I still use Novation SL for plugins that can be totally controlled remotely, and use Komplete Kontrol for somethings with that keyboard, and some things with Push for easy macro type controls, Most else is touch with dial. touch is really nice for graphical drawing type things with synths.

I find a touch screen especially useful for using guitar amp and effect plugins. Thankfully Amplitube 5 is touch friendly. It is so much easier making adjustments with a pick in your hands on a screen than using a mouse, you don't have to keep putting the pick down. It's easier than anything actually, even a real amp and effect pedals, as I have a stand-up desk to you just reach out and make adjustments on screen if you ant to stand and play.

I've been told multiple times that Amplitube 5's touch support is hit or miss. Some say navigating menus is a nightmare. I wish to get a touch screen similar to yours for my Windows 11 desktop as I think it'd be more intuitive than messing around with MIDI learn on each and every preset.

Could you confirn what works and what doesn't out of these actions?

- Toggling effects on and off.

- Twisting knobs and dials.

- Adding/Removing/Moving effects.

- Scrolling through the signal chain (bottom window).

- Scrolling through the effects chain (The 6 effects before the amp as well as fx loop/master fx patches).

All of this works. There are a couple things that aren't great though. Moving the mic around th amp speaker is glitchy as I recall, and also you need to be careful where you leave your mouse pointer as that can cause weird behavior in the bottom section. I think you have to move your mouse pointer somewhere else and then touch works fine there. Something like that, it's been a while.
