Yeah, that one doesn't impress me much. I guess it's a good option for a "poor man's Digitakt", but IDK. I sorta see it as an affordable way for people to get into the Elektronosphere so that they get hooked on the workflow and then realize they need to upgrade to Digitakt or AR2 or something.

I'm a bit of a Elektron fanboy so take my words with a bit of salt. I got the Syntakt some weeks back and I owned the Rytm since it came out + replaced it with the mk2 when tha came out. The AR is amazing especially with the combo of using samples + the Dual VCO, which basically is four separate monophonic synths - that engine is extremely good for bass sounds.

That being said, the Syntakt is effing incredible and the only thing that keeps it from being the Elektron one-stop-flagship is the lack of samples. If I had to choose between the AR and the ST I think I would pick the ST. If you have a Digitakt along with the ST that wouldn't even be a question. That's a killer setup.

I’ve got a MK1 and I really like it a lot. I wouldn’t say that it’s going to make a hard core 808 fan happy, but it’s got a unique voice of it’s own, and of course any sample can easily be loaded into it. I also have a Maschine Mk1 with the latest software, and I find the two complement each other well. I looked at every available drum synth and it was the clear winner, especially for it’s more aggressive tone and flexibility. I can get x0x sounds out of samples or a software emulation.

I'm a fanboy in training, so you've already got my attention :D

Yeah, I can only imagine how killer that would be and it's certainly something to consider. My problem is that I currently have 14 hardware synths, 3 hardware drum machines, and not enough audio inputs, MIDI ins/outs, or desk space, so condensing is my main goal (a few of my synths are about to go on the chopping block as well). Thanks for the input, though, it's definitely a good option to think about before I actually pull the trigger on an AR2!

Yeah, it doesn't need to be a perfect emulation of any specific classic drum synth, I just wanted to know that it could generally cover that range because none of the demos I've been finding have shown off that side of it. That's one of the main reason I like the sample playback side of it - I have countless x0x samples for those times when I want a good emulation, but also have the ability to dial in something in that ballpark using the analog engines. Seems like the AR2 is exactly what I've been hoping it would be.

Haha... yeah sorry about laughing, but I know that situation all too well. So yeah, condensing something into one piece is a genial move. If that's the case, I would go with the AR. But if the DualVCO thingy isn't a big thing for you (or the drum synths), I would seriously consider a Digitakt. The workflow on that machine is like perfect butter. I especially love that samples are individually connected to different patterns. You can do that with the AR too - but you have to do that manually. For every track.

Well, thanks for making me feel better about my 9 synths and one drum machine. (Maschine not included) Part of why I can find an Analog Four and Maschine enough is because I do lean heavily on plugins to fill in the cracks. Running them inside Maschine has been a great way to make them feel more “hardware.”

Well, the size of your “ballpark” is really what’s going to determine whether or not it’s for you. It’s definitely for me. Maybe watch some tutorials about sound design to see if it can make the sounds you like.

I currently do have a Digitakt! It was my first Elektron purchase that I made a few months ago. My plan is to replace that and the DrumBrute Impact (and possibly Cycles) with the AR2 and have one unit cover both my analog and sample(r) needs. Honestly, I'm more interested in the analog side, but with the option to include samples, so the AR2 seems like exactly what I want. :tu:

That design makes me floored every time I see it. So incredibly beautiful.
Have fun and do explore the DualVCO for bass sounds.

The one thing about the AR2 that has surprised me is the quality of the pads. I wouldn’t say that they’re great and they’re certainly not as nice as my Maschine mk3 pads, but a few reviews complained about how bad they sucked that I was concerned they might be totally unusable, but they’re actually not bad at all (not that I’m a master finger drummer, mind you).

The pads on the mk1 was really stiff. But I agree, the mk2 pads are not that bad.
