How does Vangelis get his choir sound?

I'm talking about the older stuff prior to (iirc) even the Emulator. the CS80 doesn't do it (does it?). Was there an old synth that produced those sounds?

no idea, me er really listened to him beyond bladerunner.

Roland VP-330 was used extensively by Vangelis, and is all over the Blade Runner soundtrack (the 'bed' strings that run throughout Blade Runner Blues are a great example). short version: VP-330 was a Vangelis staple for a while there, and has some famous 'simulated choir' sounds in it.
After that he used real singers, often just 3 to 5 total and then made them sound 'bigger' through layering, etc.

Actually,in 1973 Rick Wakeman recorded a choir and put the tapes in his own customised mellotron for his famous 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea recording w/ narration by Vincent Price
