Hi, I'm new to mixing learning. I know there're many occasions music is played back in summed mono, i.e. adding left and right channels into a single channel. So mono compatibility will be needed for stereo mixing. I find summed mono very similar to the concept of mid channel. Does summed mono equal to the mid channel of an audio? If so, when listening to summed mono music, the side channel will be lost?

Yes, left+right corresponds to the mid channel (and left-right is the side channel).
It's common to apply some attenuation (-3dB or -6dB) depending on what you do with the mid and side channels (ex. can the result go above 0dB? if so is this a problem? etc)
