I feel inundated with resources and insistence that I 'remove' resonances practically wherever they may appear. After having tried to do so, I find myself asking, how do we actually use resonances, particularly cutoff resonance? I don't want to be mindlessly slaughtering things that might actually be useful and simply a part of music.
I was learning about the ladder filter and it struck me that resonance could be used to situate things deliberately, to emphasize the character wanted from a sound. Give the guitar solo a bump at a 10k cutoff and the acoustics a bump right above it at a 12k cutoff. It's possible I'm overthinking this and am basically just talking about EQ in general, but one doesn't know what one doesn't know.

You're not overthinking at all. Curiosity is good.
Resonances can be used to en extreme in acid type of basses and distorted guitars or like you said just simply to emphasise a frequency in which case it's kinda like an eq.
There's nothing wrong with removing a resonance because they can be annoying and you can automate it with plugins like soothe and DSEQ.
The general rule is if it sounds good = good.

Thank you, CHOOS. I had two somewhat-competing ideas in my head: that resonances are basically evil, as they are so often spoken about, and Chris Lord-Alge saying to try giant EQ moves to create incorrect context and then to dial them back, as "it's not going to make anyone bleed." If it sounds good, it sounds good indeed. Thanks again.

Ideally resonances are already taken care of while recording the audio. That's why mixer consoles have dual parametric eq.
Novice engineers might benefit from recording all "as is" and apply eq afterwards. So you are not committed to the eq done while recording, and don't need to do it right the firsr time.
This applies to audio recorded with microphones.
Synths with resonant filters is another story. Why first put it in and remove afterwards? Does not make sense, it's part of the character.
Decades ago I tried to recreate a bell-like sound with a substractive synth (Prophet-600) and it missed a sizzling sound in upper harmonics. Already used up the two oscillators. I nailed it with filter resonance at around 5kHz.
Once carefully crafted you don't want it removed. Unless it annoys you ofcourse.
