That's weird because I just checked my account and I definitely got Eos 2 for free. According to my invoice, it was on the 17th of March this year and included a discount code from somewhere or other. Lucky me!

Plugin Alliance had it for sale at $19.99 on March 17th, but I have no idea how you managed to get it for free.

EOS 2 was a paid upgrade for EOS owners. It was 20 bucks, I believe. I've been receiving emails from audio damage for the last 12+ years. There was never anything about an EOS 2 upgrade being free, as far as I can recall. Their pattern has always been paid upgrades at reasonable prices.

I have at least 3 licenses for Eos2, but only paid for one. The others were giveaways from here & there. Same with Dubstation2 iirc

But I would never have paid for it in the first place, so that's not it. The discount code started with "PA", so that's possibly a clue. But it was definitely completely and utterly free -

It's a bit scary that I only got it two months ago and have no recollection of how that happened. It's a good reverb, though, nice and subtle. When I want something less subtle, I use Arturia's plate reverb, which I am sure was absolutely free, as a gift for registered users at some point. I also have Valhalla's free (for everybody) Supermassive but I rarely reach for it unless I want something ridiculously unsubtle. ONe reverb I did pay for is Shimmerverb but I don't use it much, either. It seeme dlike such a cool thing but I find that evry time I revisit a song where I've used it, it feels like too much so I get rid of it.

Valhalla Shimmer is great, but don`t overlook Audiority XenoVerb (esp with any of its plates + its Shimmer algorithm). I have both of these superb plugins and will never part with either of them..

Surprised no one's mentioned PSP 2445 EMT, though I suppose it's not the most versatile. I have the DVR250 (EMT 250), which apparently used the same algorithm as the EMT 244, yet I get way better results from the PSP.

I have the PSP 2445 EMT. And you’re right, it’s just not versatile enough to be anyone’s favourite. That said, I get very good results on some material.

I pretty much only use it on snares or sometimes vocals. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I use either it or the Arturia EMT 140 when I want a plate. Usually one or the other works, but never both. It really depends on the style and vibe of the song whether it calls for a digital plate or “real” plate. To me, both of these plates evoke very specific eras and are quite limited in their uses. Neither could ever be my main (or only) reverb.

It's funny you'd call them "limited in their uses." Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon was recorded with just an EMT 140 plate reverb, no other reverbs. Didn't seem to hurt that production at all... does it sound 'quite limited' to you?

I think even a simple plate can do far more than we might initially think; we're just too damn spoiled with this superabundance of options.

Dark Side of the Moon sounds good indeed. <3 But also distinctly sounds like the era that it was recorded in.
I know, go figure. But I think that's what Jamcat is referring to. If you don't want that 60's-70's sound, the plate might not be the right tool.

None the less I agree with you that Plates are underrated for many tasks!
I use Liquidsonics Lustrous Plates for those sounds. Trying it out last year was the most inspired I've been by a reverb plugin probably ever. So in response to OP I guess that's my favorite.

Again, does the mixing of Dark Side sound "quite limited" to you, reverb wise? I'm just throwing such info into the discussion because I think we often over-compartmentalize these plugins, and thereby short change them. Saying the 140 is 'quite limited' in its uses strikes me as such a case, that's all. I don't think it's limited at all, and I think Dark Side is just one case in point example.

that sums up my feelings on the matter pretty succinctly. To answer your Q, no, I do not exclusively use a 140 for all of my reverbs, nor did I ever suggest that I did -- I can use something else, and still believe that the 140 is not 'quite limited' in its uses; these are not mutually exclusive scenarios, despite you seeming to think they are. Regardless, if I was forced to record with nothing but a 140, I would be just fine, and the only thing preventing me from doing that is the choice paralysis many of us here suffer from. Frankly, I wish I had better self-control in imposing such limitations, I would probably benefit from it!

I answered your rhetorical question with a rhetorical question of my own.

And personally, I’ve never been a huge fan of Darkside of the Moon. Later albums like Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and The Division Bell are much better. And also, I couldn’t imagine those albums being done with only a 140 plate reverb or those songs being on Darkside. It never would have worked.
