hi. i'm trying to re-create an AM/FM radio sound effect but am having an EXTREMELY hard time doing so. and NO, i am NOT talking about a cheezy EQ effect that mocks the output of an old radio, i am talking about pure modern-day AM/FM radio. i've literally tried everything that could possibly work and have found nothing close to what i'm trying to do. i have been working with audio for almost twelve years and have never come across anything THIS difficult to replicate.

here are several examples, consisting of AM/FM radio broadcasts, songs recorded from stations and a few emergency alert system relays. it sounds like some sort of phase-compressor or delay of some sort:

any help is greatly appreciated. i prefer free plug-ins, as i really don't want to spend money.

thank you.

One thing I found useful re: radio is that it's apparently standard to have 4 allpass filters at 200 Hz in broadcasting. You can do that with ReaEQ bands, or use non-modulating phasers (e.g. with Melda MPhaser), or stack Ableton EQ Three. There's also a paid plugin called kiloHearts Diseperser. Is that what you're looking for, does that help?

Unfortunately not available anymore, yet might be the exact thing you are looking for:

A huge amount of info in this thread, some of it from experienced people in the field;

I know that FM broadcasts are usually super compressed and there’s a hard cut off of 15 kHz.

bro, none of those recording have anything in common with each other. There's no universal sound signature, so what exactly are you looking for?

In short: extreme multi-band up and downwards compression, multi-band limiting and auto-gain compensation - tuned to each station for their "house sound" ofcourse - plus mono-izing, widening, noise reduction, clipping, exotic filtering, auto phase rotation, subharmonics, pre-emphasis, HF limiting, and on. Research: Orban radio processors.

I can't remember the name but there was a freeware developer who kind of delved into this area.

Personally, why bother? Just use OTT, Maximus or Soundgoodizer or something.

Somewhat Orban Optimod inspired I think.

how do they not have anything in common? they LITERALLY came directly from FM radio and sound identical. listen closely. it sounds like there's some sort of phase compression or delay with the broadcasts.
