Toy piano recommendation

Dear All,

I´m trying to find a decent toy piano for our 1½ year old with at least 2½ octave. I know there are tons of cheap small keyboards, but I find that the best approach is having one, preferably upright as opposed to grand for space reasons, that she can just go and sit at rather than having a multifunctional plastic rectangle with all the great throw-up-in-the-air factor that comes with such a thing. She already has toys with buttons and funny sounds, but I want the piano to just be a piano.
I´d prefer an acoustic one, but also feel tempted with the electronic versions (such as Korg Tinypiano, which however is very expensive), where the sound probably is easier to accept listening to for a parent for many hours.

Any recommendations?

seriously though, recently gone through similar searches for my granddaughter.
most acoustic toy pianos i found, actually had a more grating sound than the sampled one (with mic and recording function) we eventually bought they sound more like one of those tiny glockenspiels, really peaky.

there are some nicer looking ones though, but rarely with more than one and half octaves if ever?

i am buying my granddaughter a drum kit though. get her dad back for keeping me awake when he was a baby

I´ll teach my daughter to play drums on her chest, tables and everything else, as I´ve been doing since I was very tiny myself Yes, the acoustic ones have that glockenspiel sound, but I´m not so sure about how it is listening to that all day long. that one is an upright, but only 25 keys

it can be annoying, although, they tend to move around, different toys, so it may only be half hour here and there really

and none of them, either digital or acoustic will sound great, concert ready but, any of them will give any kid lots of fun!!!

Well, I decided that the way to go is an electronic piano. The big problem is all the bells and whistles coming with it.. my baby can´t just play piano, but will have the choice of GM-oboes, -harps and what´s worse. But I thought about hours of the sound of cash registers (aka acoustic baby pianos) and realized that this is something which I´ll never be able to support with my heart. So let´s see about the bontempi grand piano I´ve just offered to buy for 10 EUR. It looks too full of confusing things you can do, but at least I won´t get the cash register sound

I recorded a old toy piano once that I had fixed some non-working keys on. It was from the 1930s and had a metal piece inside with rods of varying lengths for the notes.

I would recommend the Yamaha Reface CP, a sturdy and good sounding instrument!

It justifies the sound in some weird way, and I believe that especially in a context with more instruments, a toy piano could sound great. Did you make the video clip as well, and if so, how??

Another vote for Yamaha reface CP, there’s a hidden piano on it.

Is that particularly built for baby fingers? In any case, it´s very expensive for something that she could pour a cup of water into the next day, but thanks

So I received the bontempi piano that I linked to earlier. Very unsturdy and low-q feel, which I don´t understand you´ll get from a European company, that´s been specialized in kids toy instruments since the 1930´s. Nevertheless, for 10 EUR it´s a steal and she seems to be enjoying it so far.
On a sidenote, I´d recommend midi keyboard controllers from Nektar. I´ve got one of those here in the living room, that I´ve often had her sitting on my lap and playing on, where playing means hammering hard, lifting up and dropping etc., and it still works! I should mention though, that the first of these keyboards had a defect, where sometimes certain keys wouldn´t send a midi signal, but the manufacturer sent me a new one within the warranty, and actually never requested the old one back.

when i was a teenager, my "bass sound" was a bontempi reed organ, which i would jam, 3 or 4 adjacent keys in with bluetac, then put it through a phaser ot chorus, to play along with (badly) on guitar.

The clip was made by a friend and is an hommage to Joseph Beuys .
