Suppose I have two synths and one amp. Am I right that I can plug each synth into an unpowered mixer, then the unpowered mixer into the amp, and in that way have both synths play through that amp?

A mixer mixes multiple inputs into one output. (Well actually, bigger mixers have multiple outputs)
A powered mixer is just a mixer with a built-in power amp.
But there are also powered speakers, which have the amp built in. This is very common for nearfield monitors as used in studios.
Eventually you need an amp somewhere: either separate, or in the mixer or in the speakers. Just don't connect the speaker output of a powered mixer into the input of powered speakers. (Well actually, this is what guitar players did 60 years ago to get distorted sound)
