I like KvR for the most part, and I do use software, but you hardly ever see hardware synth discussions here (only natural I guess). And when you do, someone's bound to drop a "why do you bother with hardware, man? VSTs are the future!" or similar comment. That may well be, but I still love the immediate feel and control of hardware, and apparently I don't mind spending insane amounts of money either as I've just went and got yet another hardware synth.

Any recommendations for friendly forums as busy, fun and diverse as KvR where hardware synths are discussed?

I really like the Analogue Heaven list. Definitely the place to talk about hardware synths.

Right, ok. The vintagesynth forum seems like fun, but it's so mind-numbingly slow I'd give up after browsing two posts. Plus it's not exactly teeming with life is it?

Will check out the Analogue Heaven list, but my gear is mostly digital. Think I'd be accepted there anyway?

I've previously lurked at rec.music-makers.synths, newsgroup. Not bad last I checked. Just in case anyone else was interested.

Yeah, but that's only for analog synths. If you try talking about a digital synth, sampler, etc they'll promptly have you tarred and feathered!

This is an alternate list, that goes by the name of Digital Hell. Naturally, they only talk about digital synths.

To paraphrase Rodney King, "Can't we all have one place where synth lovers of all sorts can just get along with one another?"

P.S. I would love to have a hardware synth forum (or two) added to KvR, but I'm not sure what anyone else thinks of the idea.

What is actually the right forum on KvR for this subject? This one?

Actually, I think Analogue Heaven allows discussions of soft synths that emulate analog hardware, or hardware synths that emulate classic analog hardware. You just can't talk about little things like: additive synthesis, computers, FM synthesis, granular synthesis, neural synthesis, PM synthesis, physical modeling, resynthesis, romplers, samplers, or wavetable synthesis -- unless you achieve these synthesis methods in a purely analog fashion. Ironically, discussing square waves is allowed. (Aren't they "digital" in nature?) Discussing "analog" sequencers is I think also allowed, even though many early "analog" sequencers definitely had some bits (no pun intended) of "digital" circuitry at their very heart.

I think Digital Hell approves of discussing digital emulations of analog gear, but I could be mistaken. I think soft-synths are also okay. The Digital Hell people seem perhaps a bit less strict, but that's possibly because they have much less traffic on that list, and don't want to risk chasing off the few regular posters they currently have--compared to Analog Heaven which always have a fairly high amount of traffic. Then again, maybe the Digital guys simply aren't so religiously obsessed as some of the Analog people can be at times.

Of all the musical discussion places I've visited on the internet, KvR and the Synth-DIY mailing list are the two best synthesis-related forums I've ever found, by far! Noise Vault and Patch Arena are also personal favorites, but those are much more specialized in nature.
