comb filters, flangers, phasers? anyone else think the terminology sucks with "phase" fx

thanks wok but that is still too hard for me to follow. the wiki article is wayyyy over my head, the edn i mostly understood. i guess i may have to put this in the too complex basket for now.

There is also an historical reason why they are different but associated in musician mind:
first there was the tape flanging effect in post production, then later came the phaser which was made to emulate the tape flanging, but because it's filter based, you can only have a limited number of notches. Later BBD arrived and a true comb filter effect with infinite number of notches was possible, so it was called flanger: a delay based effect, better than the "old" phaser, as said in the adds. it didn't take long for phaser to become it's own thing, more than an obsolete emulation of tape effect. so this was two very different technologies invented to do the same effect.
