When did you first realise that you could create music?

i was 10. i wanted to play drums in the elemetary school band. the band director gave me a cowbell and a stick and told me to play the 'shave and a haircut' riff whenever he pointed at me till he let me know to stop.
shaped my whole percussion career.
--- got stuck on the syncopated stuff.
--- found it better to play without the bother of reading music.
-- best bud was in the same drum section thru high school

I can't. I'm just here for the chicks.
Yet another plan that I didn't think through properly before adopting
Seriously though, I took piano/electric organ lessons at school for 2 1/2 years, but didn't really do much with it. Early university years I got into electronic stuff (started with the Chemical Brothers, moved on to Crystal Method and Prodigy and before I knew it I was buying Aphex Twin and Autechre CDs - still not sure how that happened...). Met a girl who was a classical musician who was always commenting on how good my ear was and that she thought I had an internal "musicality" (she was such a nice person - good thing I married her
) and decided that I wanted to give it all a go.
I don't deny that I do have some sort of musicality. Unfortunately, I'm very rarely inspired enough to compose more than 8 or 16 bar loops. I'm working on changing that by improving my knowledge of musical theory (I work better with defined boundaries rather than a blank canvas approach) but that will come with time.
I've spent the last year learning guitar. That's been fun. I'm buying my first electric in the new year

umm nice question...
when I was around 15 years old (that is, 12 years ago) I realised I invented songs. I mean I was walking by the street and literally a new song was developed in my mind.
at the time I only had a casio keyboard and some guitar effects of my brother's and then I wrote and created around 10 songs or so. but bored cos I had no money to buy a decent instrument I let it be.
Then I wrote short stories.
but I was frustrated cos my real aspiration was to be able to make those melodies that wandered in my brain real. and then I discovered the advanced musical software. I didn't know that even existed.
so I gathered info and bought a soft sequencer and started my real pleasure in life. During the first week I had already wrote my first song. I discovered then I was able to create songs. good or bad, that's not for me to tell. a year and a half later I've created almost 80 songs. and even more important, I've recreated myself. I'm not frustrated anymore.

The Ramones were it for me.
Got me a cheap electric guitar and a crappy amp and never looked back. Later on I discovered technology and software, which distracted me from music making to the point where I became an engineer and my friends would be on stage. I still make music for my own pleasure, but gave up on the band thing.

I always wanted to make music when I was younger. I didn't have the idea to actually try until some of my friends started to play. Probably around the age of 13. Now 26 (27 on the 21rst)

Had previously played bass and synth (Korg M1). None of them unleashed any creative potential.
Got Fasttracker II on pc and lots of samples. Made a lot of interesting tunes, ambient with slow beats mostly. May have been a turning point, as I actually created music.
Noodled around a few years, interest in synths and music grew with the emerging software technology, but didn't make a single tune. Then 11. february 2003, I got Tracktion
- since then everything has been going smoothly.

The actual first time? Playing on a keyboard (one of the very first ones) an uncle of mine, using the black keys and noticing that that actually sounded quite cool. Got my own simple Yamaha keyboard but didn't get very far (I know, I should have taken lessons) but after learning C, F and G major chords from a friend who DID know how to play I really got interested. Learned a few more chords, made hundreds of songs (which I did record unfortunately so I can still hear them...
) and much, much later I'm posting on K-v-R.

Two words bro: Mario Paint
From the moment I started placing little mushrooms, Mario heads, and fire flowers on a piano roll I knew that I could make amusing music for myself without any real-time playing on my part. I even made my first demo on an old tape deck boombox with an internal mic for an elementary school class project (I think I was 10 or 11 years old then).
I gave up music for awhile after I moved on to other interest (and other game consoles), only to pick it back up again when I was 16 and into electronic music (specifically Big Beat). I probably would have never tried to make music with my computer without having some experience with making music on my SNES.

Swing your arms from side to side, c'mon let's do the Mario!

The day I jammed with two friends in a second story, potsmokey bedroom (beers smuggled past the parents)... and we noticed two very cute girls sitting outside on the curb digging it. A defining moment for me.
