OTT is life, life is OTT.
Life's a bitch

Yeah, I've basically resorted to making a simple 'init' patch and duplicating that instrument and not using any of the patch management stuff at all.

Since Bitwig can't do undo (in plugins), I usually duplicate instruments and disable them once I have something I might use and carry on exploring in the duplicated instance.

RichardSemper wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 4:49 pmFrom a user perspective, I have yet to see any benefit or advantage to the format. Only negatives. First location of the plugin files is predetermined, unlike vst2 ... preset management is also restricted more ... Developers do not seem to be particularly happy with it either, and Steinberg is trying to force them away from vst2 rather than encouraging them with better features. Even after all the time since vst3 was introduced it still seems that many plugins are faulty in the vst3 version whilst working well in vst2
My 2 cents here: VST3 is a bit clunky compared to VST2, but the fact many plugins have faulty implementations isn't actually a problem with VST3 but the individual developers. Is it harder to implement? Yeah, it seems so, which is bad for having a lot of people adopt it properly.
However, there is one very specific benefit of VST3: sample accurate automation. This is not possible with VST2.
Since I'm working to have VST3s from my VST2s, I can confirm that is harder to work with VST3SDK, if you like me don't start a plug-in from scratch, but want to convert a VST2 to VST3.
Beside the goodness of sample accurate automation, there are others as safer threading, isolation of instances and more. At the same time the SDK is not fully consistent, there parts that many devs will never use, sometimes you don't know what to choose from the functions and there's little help from the docs.
With VST3SDK since 2021 Steinberg explicitly discourages to build VST2 with it, the VST2Warpper and AUWrapper they (do) have require some mystical knowledge, LOL.
Not a surprise then that JUCE and others libs are so popular.

BTW does anyone find any relevant sound difference between ADLplug and OPNplug? I'm almost deaf but I should still hear that, LOL

My first every synth was the little Yamaha PSS-480 from 1987 (I was 11). I think it has the YMF262 chip, or something similar. This emulator sounds very similar to my old synth! Will be fun using a modern DAW and production with my old synth.

OPNplug has a little more low end, but ADL has waveforms besides sine.

One thing's for sure, the same FM settings sound very different between both plugins. The level sliders seem to scale differently ( some sort of lin/log thing ? ) ADL is much easier to work with in this regard, imo. After a bit of fiddling it's possible to get them to sound quite similar, though. Providing one uses only the sine wave on ADL, of course. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to use, tbh. And feeling a little miffed about the lack of (hard) panning options, which the emulated chips absolutely offered. Any one instance efforts will have to be strictly mono.

I don't understand why waste time choosing which of the two synths to use  . The best would be that both can be used by each participant.

Would it be too much to ask bjporter and Richard to allow the use of both synthes this month? Come on guys.

I definitely agree with this. I am probably not going to participate since I hate the knob UI, but still, would definitely agree this should be a mix-and-match OSC.

Here is my submission:

https://soundcloud.com/therealgl3n/glen ... las-anthem

After downloading the plugin to my Mac, Logic would not validate it and Digital Performer crashed anytime I enabled a second instance of it. Reaper seemed to work fine, but I hadn't used it that much in the past. To compose the track, I used Logic and a "similar FM plugin" as a scratchpad, then transferred the MIDI to Reaper. Once it was in Reaper, I changed all of the sounds to the ADLMIDI, and used the DAW for mixing and mastering.

There are 16 instances of the plug-in in use. Reaper's native EQ (Mostly HPF and LPF) and Compression were used on each track, along with some instances of Vahalla's SuperMassive for effects, and some OTT on the bass to smooth it out. For the mastering bus, I used OTT and W1.

I hope you enjoy the track, and good luck to all participants!

Thanks. That's interesting. I started with ADLplug and got good sounds, I only tried a few presets from the other. For simplicity I will stick to ADLplug.

I agree on both points. Still I will mostly use modified presets and maps a few controls to automations, then GUI will stay close, LOL.
