2022: A Year in Gear (What You've Bought or Want to Buy in 2022)

Knowing some guitarists, I don't think it's any different with pedalboards. Or plugins. Variety is the spice of life.
Prior to getting my Pulsar-23 I had most of my gear set up on my desk, wired into a patchbay. It was handy because at any stage of a jam I could bring any of it in. But after a while it felt a bit static.
I cleared the desk when the Pulsar arrived and I'm now trying to mix things up a bit. Set up a few bits of gear at a time and focus on that for a while.

For me pedals are like pokemon, there is no end really, I just swap them out as I want.
Eurorack is only different due to a lack of space and the fact that they can't be swapped
out without some accommodation for storage and the effort to perform a swap. 1000 hp
worth of modules is approaching the limit for me. If I had room for walls and walls of the
stuff, there would probably be no end to that as well as well. Samne thing for synths.

With modular I think it’s kind of an iterative process. My main focus is getting one main case sorted and rid of dead wood e.g. I’ve only one noise source, a Behringer 150 module and although it has a ring mod, LFO and sample and hold I’m only using the noise outputs so I’m replacing it with a 903A, and that gives me back 12 hp of space.
Pedalboards are similar, you may have pedals for way more than one, but most like just having their most used in one place.

you see some guitarists, still using the tube screamer in to the amp, you see some who have a different phaser for different tracks and end up with them in drawers on stage, using something like a gig rig to do the footwork.
(biffy clyro spring to mind).
people like nick reindhart, who will use anything that messes sound up!!!
same as modular people i guess, there will be some, who have a specific set up they aim towards, and it becomes their synth!
then there's the let's see what happens crowd

When I gigged my pedalboard was pretty much fixed. A couple of things were swapped out and added over the years but that was a slowish process.
These days things change day to day but there's still usually core of the pedals I know best. It's probably because I just make a noise to please myself these days so I'm pretty free to audition 15 different fuzzes and 5 wahs if I want to. Yes it is onanism

I don’t know if this gets released in 2022, but if it does I’m definitely getting U-he’s filter.
I think I would benefit from that envelope too, but I really want the filter.

It’s funny, I honestly don’t know where I’m at with pedals. I was ready to write that I’m enjoying a smaller number of pedals (and I have a stack ready to sell), but the truth is that my attention is pretty well divided right now especially after getting Digitakt and Syntatk.
I don’t think there’s ever a such thing as being done. I know I still want to buy an RE-2 and RE-202 (yeah both - so Pokémon it is). Beyond those two I like what I’m working with for now. I think that’s important… at least knowing this is it for just now. I think the bigger issue would be if it stopped being fun.

Mini Desktop Speakers (Viido Office), £3 from £land.
I can't believe how revealing these are, they also have a lot of bass for their size, miniature NS white cone?
Things stick out like a sore thumb with these, I can't believe I missed some things on headphones and a DIY Mixcube. I see these as a no-brainer, I need to get another pair, ASAP.
I also listened to some reference tracks, these were balanced as expected, bass was also present.

The little 2hp Arp I got from eBay finally arrived, lights work fine based on chord mode etc, but it’s not arping. Just acts like a constant tone v/oct generator based on whatever the root note control is set to and ignores triggers and also anything passed into the root note input. Before I send it back for a refund has anyone ever seen this and fixed it?

probably best asking on mod wiggler forum, don't know if anyone else has the 2hp arp here, doesn't ring a bell?
pekbro will know for sure if anyone has though...

Talking of slippery slopes, having banged on about my line in the sand is no hardware effects units, every effect on the DAW, I just ordered one of these

It sounds lush and is uber tweakable via MIDI cc and I ran out of reasons not to buy one. Still love my software plugin effects though, at the moment I’m particularly grooving on Audio Damage’s Other Desert Cities and Noise Engineering’s Desmodus.
