I have this new synth here I found on the weekend and I like the sounds, except that in some cases I need to increase the release part of the envelope so it sounds really good. But then the notes overlap, I am not happy with that, and it's a very basic free synth that doesn't have a mono/polyphony button. Is there any clever trick I could pull off on it to simulate the "choking" we often do with drums?

It's a polysynth, it has many voices, hence, many throats. It's all good.

Limiting the polyphony of the synth, if it has such an option (most of them do). If not, you could just record each chord one by one and chop off the tails.

Set these envelope values: short decay & long release.
Then you can control it with playing style.
Press the key short: long tail.
Hold the note: no tail.

Or just automate the release parameter.

Or do it the other way round, short release and long decay and low sustain. Hold the last note long enough…
If its a subtractive synth, you could recreate the patch with a monophonic version…

Anyway if you don’t tell us what synth it is or what DAW you use all answers are just a shot in the dark…
