I've had similar sentiments, a desire for a better melding between the crispness and customisability of synthesised percussion, and expressive qualities. I think there's a lot of scope for new instruments in this area.

Holy s*** Chromaphone is awesome. I can finally make music in this genre!... basically 100% inspired by Age of Empires II soundtrack. The only thing that is not Chromaphone is that I layered a few drum loops together, but you hear a lot of Chromaphone's drums as well.

drummaxx from IL had this, a single drum instance.

The problem with Drummaxx is that it's mono. They could easily have made it stereo by making the noise sources stereo.

I quite agree. There's a huge lack of drum synths out there at the moment. Something about the sound of Drum Computer just feels off, like it's muffled or something. Hard to explain. Desperately wanting something to create original drum samples with, so much so that I'm probably going to go the hardware route.

Yeah, drum computer is a bit weird sounding, especially the kicks sound soft and blunted, i prefer Ephemere or VSDSX

Just stopping in to say thanks for the recommendations. Some I weren’t familiar with. Micro tonic is my go to and I enjoy it a lot, but always looking. . I like noise engineering stuff, but seemed to have missed the ‘percussion synth’.
