Hardware synths that blew away your expectations

It's like Metallica - they are awesome despite how bad the production was on their early albums, not because of it.

Did those artists who released those early tracks with shit gear keep using shit gear or did they spend up big on decent equipment once they'd made a bit of money?

If we're talking about how instruments can make a genre than guitars must be the worst instrument ever created. Any kind of metal just sounds like a Tasmanian devil being put through a cheese grater. Not entirely sure, but I think I'd prefer to be forced to listen to hippityhop than metal, maybe even Cuntry&Western.

OK, I'm totally in the honeymoon phase and you're all probably sick of me already (too bad, deal with it ), but this Elektron Analog Four mk2 is really blowing my mind. I mean, I expected it to be as cool as my recently purchased RYTM mk2, but the A4 is a lot more synth than I had expected and, in combination with the RYTM, it's on a whole other level. Looks like I'm back to living off 3 hours of sleep from now on...

I never really got that into my Analog Four. Yeah, it's a really nice synth but it's a lot of work compared to HIve, ANA or DUNE and, ulltimately, nowhere near as good as any of those. I'd say it's about as good as Tone 2's Saurus, or maybe Korg's Mono/Poly VSTi. I haven't switched mine on since before the pandemic.

I'm not fan of metal but if you can't appreciate how good Metallica are at what they do, there is little hope for you. I love singing Enter Sandman at the top of my lungs, it's an awesome song. Die Krupps did "A Tribute to Metallica", doing all electronic versions of some of their songs to show how good they are and how little they rely on the guitars. It's what made me listen a little or eclosely and ocme to appreciate their songwriting skills a bit more. And, of course, they 've done their tours with a symphony orchestra, too.

Badly produced albums are better most of the time because most of the time the early work is way more creative. As many musicians just do the samé thing over and over again.

I have a couple of Macintosh G4s that house them and spare converted server with DC powersupply and fanspeed controls but it wasn't as stable as the G4s. Nostalgia.

My cards are in a pair of Win98 boxes. I'm using old Asus motherboards with 1Ghz Pentium 3s - they've been rock solid for twenty years. That said, I stumbled across two G4s (with translucent blue trim) being thrown out by a neighbour a couple of years ago. I have them on standby if (and when) the PCs die.

That’s great news, glad you’re liking the A4. Like another poster said I also couldn’t really get into the A4 either. Really wanted to, but sold a Moog synth to get it and ended up regretting it. Sold the A4 and rebought the Moog lol. I suspect it was my own fault really, not spending enough time with it…. I watched lots of videos on YouTube with people doing cool stuff with it!

I’d say for me, the only synth that has blown me away (if you can even say that) is the Rytm. Love that thing!

not many analog synths have the range of modulation possibilities that the A4 has! Plus the excellent midi CC control. You can also use it as a 4 voice MPE synth. The A4 is very expressive and playable!

The A4 is a synth that needs some work and dedication. It is not an instant gratification synth.

I gave my A4 MKII away as a gift. I still have the Analog Keys though

That’s mad lol. How do you incorporate 2 Rytms
into your workflow, if you don’t mind me asking? Seems like there could be a lot of clashing with that many potential sounds going on at once…

Sometimes one of them would be doing more ambient textural stuff. I also like having the additional analog distortion and compressor. They sounds amazing on samples. Don't always use all the voices of both...

Yeah I guess it makes sense. Having two rytms just never ever crossed my mind lol. I do love what the distortion and compression can do to the sound. Wish sounds coming in through the ext in would go through the distortion as well though. I usually have the DFAM plugged into ext in and reckon that would benefit from being crunched up a bit, the compressor does the trick as well though!
