A weird thing is happening to my audio now. I know that when there is a melody being on solo as an intro or merely soloed out as a track, the sound is louder than if there are other instruments/drums in the track with it because the sound is brought down with limiters or what not as the track compresses to be leveled. But, what is happening is the solo sounds without drums are MUCH louder before the drums kick in on tracks that are NOT IN THE DAW. When I listen to songs on youtube now, the intro of a single melody/sound is much louder than the drop with the beat, where the songs volume is decreased substantially. Seems like my computer audio card is compressing sound outside of REAPER. I don't know if it could be my headphones? This is a strange occurrence that seems difficult to search for on the net so I decided to ask here. Thanks ahead and hopefully this thread can help others when things like this happen to them.

Do you know the fastest way to check these aspects out? I forgot how to see how the card goes to the hardware and where on the computer sound card adjustments are located (If this is what I need to know) thanks.

Hi,
It may or may not be a sound « enhancement » option like auto volume normalisation in either Windows or in your soundcard special options ; here a google for windows options :

Oh my goodness, I can't believe that this "volume normalisation' has been the disgusting culprit this whole time; or it may have been. And for how long? This has been throwing my volumes all over the place for each of my tracks depending on which one is played first as this effects outside of software on the computer master and inside any software like a daw to put it generally so. I mean even the volume itself is louder with the limiter, and compression seems to be working which I could not for so long figure out why it wasn't processing much. Well maybe I am presuming a lot and going over board, but this has been the cause. Is this always turned on and if so compression hasn't worked like pretty much AT ALL for me once I started using REAPER so perhaps this is so or I am just really bad with compression; or, does this turn on automatically in some instances in windows (I am using 7 on this one)? And thank you so much askoan for pointing me in a simple but ignorant of me direction.

I don't think it's a stock Windows behaviour, but the sort of bloatware a laptop manufacturer might pre-install to claim as an extra "feature".

It's worth a look.

Also check the DAW settings if it has it available.

I suffered from the 'normalisation' tick box in Waveform but quickly figured it out and got rid. With my music the melody sounds louder before the drop, but not as annoying as how you described with that feature.

Hope you've got it sorted now buddy!
