Does anyone know this effect?

Hello all,
on the track below (by Aphex Twin) there is right at the start (and especially audible at 0:04) some sort of delay (?) on the kick. Has anyone an idea what this could be exactly? (I thought maybe it could be some sort of pitch shifter...)

It could be reverb. Another way to make it is the same as making a kick with a sine but instead of using a sine you use stereo white noise with a bandpass filter and a pretty steep resonance but not that it make a sine-like sound again.
Let me know if this makes sense?

Tbh i don't understand this...CHOOS wrote: Sun Jun 12, 2022 7:50 pm nother way to make it is the same as making a kick with a sine but instead of using a sine you use stereo white noise with a bandpass filter and a pretty steep resonance but not that it make a sine-like sound again
I had another idea that it could be just a "cool sound" triggered e.g. on the second 16th of the track. Maybe it isn't connected to the kick sound at all (like reverb, or delay). Could this be a possibility too?

Not sure if you mean this, because I can't hear anything particularly on the kick, but I wonder if you mean the thing that sounds like compressed reverb tail - in other words, there's a reverb (don't think it's on the kick) that is being ducked but then comes up in between the beats. It might also be a synth pad type of sound that's being ducked. But maybe you mean something else.

Sounds to me like a very short (perhaps gated) reverb with a tempo synced pre-delay (1/16th note but best tune it by ear). Automate the send level so it only triggers on certain hits, or duplicate the kick track and add the reverb on the duplicate track (set 100% wet) then delete some of the hits to taste. Alternately, print the reverb tail and load it up in your sampler or arrange it on the track itself (like an absolute madman).

And yeah, it sounds like the reverb is coming from the kick though probably liberally highpassed. Of course you could use literally any sample to trigger the reverb at the same spot, but it might sound less cohesive with the kick which you may or may not want.

I am not sure if it is on the kick, but it follows the kick. On the first kick immediately (but not good audible, but it is there and at 0.04 it is better audible. Also the sound is wider. I thought it could be connected with the kick sound. But i am not sure anymoreDouble Tap wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 8:15 am Not sure if you mean this, because I can't hear anything particularly on the kick, but I wonder if you mean the thing that sounds like compressed reverb tail - in other words, there's a reverb (don't think it's on the kick) that is being ducked but then comes up in between the beats. This explains what I meant

Vital Preset (Has the stereo white noise in it)
Can use some post processing for sure but it's a start.

Why won't anyone ever listen to me???
It's defo reverb on the kick! Check it out:

(I've actually got 3 different reverbs here triggering at different times, but the sky's the limit!)

First: thanks you 2, a lot for the detailed help.NAD wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 8:08 pm Why won't anyone ever listen to me???It's defo reverb on the kick! Check it out:

I think the white noise thing (what i understand now), comes in handy another time - it is definitive useful.
@NAD - your demo comes pretty close. May i ask what you used? Which algorithm (is it a plate)? - I assume that the reverb is slightly high-passed and clearly low-passed (to get rid of the hissing highs).

The one doing the 16th note delay thing is using the Ambience algorithm in ValhallaVintageVerb. I think I used one of the Gated Reverbs presets and played with the size and attack parameters (and obviously predelay). I would definitely experiment with other algorithms though and also automate the volume on the reverb return or even bounce the reverb and chop it up and play with the volume envelope to tighten it up.tomtom1 wrote: Thu Jun 16, 2022 7:07 am@NAD - your demo comes pretty close. Thanks a lot.NAD wrote: Thu Jun 16, 2022 8:12 am Yeah, and heavily process the reverb to make it as dark and thick and wide as you like.
Btw. one last question: how did you put the demo-beat together so quickly (and with the timing)?
My guess is Ableton "drums to midi" or anything like that - but maybe you are a drum progamming beast
