Unfortunately there is no Wikipedia article on Platforming yet. It is however something that is being discussed in our industry a lot. The distinction between standards and platforms is super relevant these days.
As an example, imagine there was a mobile phone from company A, and that company uses a very distinct plug for its power adapter, which only A is allowed to put into their mobile phones. But other companies are allowed to produce the counter part and make peripherals for users to buy. So now people invest not only in the phone but also in peripherals which will only ever work with that kind of adapter that A uses. When an owner of that phone wants a new phone, he needs to again buy a phone for A if he wants to keep using the peripherals he or she invested in. That is platforming. And while the plug looks like a standard because other companies can build peripherals, it is not a standard due to the exact points laid out in the meme above.
So there, it's actually quite simple to identify signs of things being a platform, and the opposite of those being signs of a standard.

Yeah I think the Apple lightning port vs usb is a not a universal example though.
Only apple uses it (but not only apple makes it as you point out).
I think my word example is a better example.. a word processor that can't read or write to word would be dead in the water. Why? because word format has become the standard.
Same with adobe's pdf.. I am sure they are several other examples.

I think it's just a variation of vendor lock-in which does have a wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendor_lock-inUrs wrote: Thu Jun 16, 2022 1:52 pm When an owner of that phone wants a new phone, he needs to again buy a phone for A if he wants to keep using the peripherals he or she invested in. It's just fantastic that the biggest concern here is the name or a comic. I've asked some devs that are not on the "official" list yet now that 1.0 is ready and it's looking really promising so far.
