Tal J-8

I made a quick comparison between demo versions of Tal J8 and Arturia's Jup-8 V4. I prefer the sound of Tal J8 as it sounds more smoother while the Arturia's sounds harsh unless I'm not setting up Arturia's version correctly?

If the original only transmitted CCs for each parameter you could use one as a controller for the software. Like when I use my Prophet 10 as a RePro controller.

I use an Electra One MIDI Controller, designed a preset that works great with TAL-J-8. Oh, and RePro too...

Arturia's version sounds great. Not harsh at all. Both very good synths.

I find that annoying, and a bit of a cop out personally. It's ok to do the test, and for the tester afterwards to share their opinions and takeaways, and ask the audience to comment on what *they* think. Not everyone will agree, but I want to hear the tester's opinions, personally. I can still make up my own mind about the tests I saw/heard...

It's not exactly a "raw Jupiter" sound. Firstly, it would be played, possibly through some FX on the way in (we don't know), through an SSL desk (possibly EQ'd/compressed on the way in), to tape - so what you're hearing isn't raw at all. It could have also been processed on the way out, depending on how the PT multitracks were assembled.

Having said that, Andy Richards was/is a great player and sound designer, and he really knew the JP8 well, so the first step would be recreating the patch, then adding a bit of SSL/analog/tape vibe and whatever other flavourings they might have used. They are also wide stereo with differences each side, indicating the JP8 was probably in dual-layer mode panned left/right.

One important thing to keep in mind about the Arturia version, and Tal version is the dual/split/whole section and round robin. That will really set it apart from the Arturia verison by a wide margin, especially if you pan each section

Sure, the sound in the Frankie-recording is massaged. But anyone know of a TAL J-8 demo or actual production that sounds as authentic Jupiter 8 as possible with all the bells and whistles/EQ/comp whatever massage needed for comparison?

Seriously, pretty sure Trevor Horn and the musicians/engineers that worked on that record would've loved to have had access to TAL J-8 back then and could've got the same sounds. Steve Lipson isn't even entirely sure it was the Jupiter-8, just thinks it was when thinking back on it almost 40 years later.

So I'd argue it's the people you're hearing, not the gear.

So you are pretty sure they could´ve got the same sounds. I´m not so sure. I haven´t heard the Tal J-8, in isolation or in mix, that -- when pushed -- sound more than the usual thin, bodyless and strained VST sound. I´m sure that if it was really capable of sounding like the actual hardware, TAL would be all over it in several demos. Prove me wrong.
