Sounds pretty close on my phone. Will listen on speakers soon.
The legato seems off though but i don't recall the jupiter 8 having a legato mode.

Thanks for doing this @waltercruz
Sure the note connections need some more work. It also sounds as if the filter closes a little more in the original.
We'd need to hear this played on a real Jupiter without the original recording chain as well. Respectively your patch through an emulated or real chain common at the time. Not sure how much of the saturation, density and creaminess comes from the chain. Real analog synths can sound a little bland too on their own IMO.

I think that Jupiter 8 can possibly have legato in solo mode, but not in unison. Needs to be checked with a Jupiter 8 ownerzvenx wrote: Tue Jun 21, 2022 2:46 am Sounds pretty close on my phone. Will listen on speakers soon.

I couldn't find evidence of that online or in the manual, but indeed it might not have been documented or much spoken about.

The stems for Relax are easy to find on google, it's always a nice exercise trying to recreate these patches.mi-os wrote: Tue Jun 21, 2022 12:47 pm Thanks for doing this @waltercruz

From the stems,it seems that it's a dual layer patch - quite possibly the same patch in upper and lower, with some slightly change each other to create that small difference that widen the sound.
Apart some sloppy playing from me, I think that it's quite a fair comparison, considering that both my patch ban be improved and the sound that we are after has obviously some processing.

The synth solo of Queen I Want to Break Free was arguably done without legato, in the unison mode of Jupiter-8, that is not monophonic too. Considering all of this, it's trickier than it seems.zvenx wrote: Tue Jun 21, 2022 1:14 pm I couldn't find evidence of that online or in the manual, but indeed it might not have been documented or much spoken about.

Hmmm this one (comes in at about 2:12)?
I can surely hear the attacks on each note that isn't pitch bended. whereas I couldn't on the Relax don't do it.
All I am trying to say is I wonder if Steve Lipson misremembers and it wasn't a Jupiter 8 after all.

yes, this is one sure is a Jupiter, cause too many people remember being a Jupiter, including they guy that played, Fred Mandel (there's a video where he tells the story in a interview)zvenx wrote: Tue Jun 21, 2022 1:34 pm Hmmm this one (comes in at about 2:12)?

To be clear, I wasn't at all questioning that the solo on the Queen song was done on Jupiter 8, it is the Relax part in question which sure sounds like it has Legato on it to me. You were able to recreate to me everything but that legato (and of course the recording chain).

Though... in this:
https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques ... sic-tracks
the only analogy synth mentioned is the JP-8..
and I imagine if Steve Lipson had done the sound on his GR300 he would remember.
But yes that Legato has me puzzled

I need to confess that I didn't knew this song until yesterday!
But it's Jupiter-8 everywhere. According Andy Richards, even some sounds that people thought initially that were Fairlight, were in fact Jupiter-8

Found this thread on the Arturia forums where, 3rd post in, someone says they've got an early Jupiter-8 and it does Legato in Solo mode - just wasn't documented in the manual:
