I heard the demos of Luftrum, and also knows the quality work of Himalya, but I have to somehow agree with hebex, I haven't found a patch bank that shows some of the edgier side of Jupiter - compare the demos of Luftrum 24 with the Jupiter demo from Matt Johnson (Jamiroquai) on his youtube channel - there's something edgier and wilder in Matt Johnson demo, and I'm sure that J-8 is capable of these sounds.

I wouldn't necessarily call that edgy but I understand better what you mean..

They may be a lot closer to Matt's sounds than the Himalaya and the Luftrum imho.

(btw, I think Matt is one of my top five sound designers.. never heard of him till actually he is on the Tal J-8 page, and gave it a listen... I have bought so many of his banks now including his Wavestate banks which I can't stop giving praise to them)

there's some talk about legato on this topic in 2020, but for a quick test I loaded Arturia Jup-8 and Solo mode is indeed legato.

There's a trick for legato on J-8, portamento on with a 0 amount works almost 100% fine (and afaik, this is how it works on other TAL synths), with a small caveat: for every non-legato note a bit of portamento happens, and in the Arturia Jup-8 it doesn't happen.

That doesn't make any sense to me, and if it were true, would be a terrible design flaw.....I have J-8 though, and just like with other TAL synths, if you put the J-8 in 'Solo' voice mode, turn Portamento to 'auto' and leave the Portamento slider at 0, there shouldn't be any portamento whatsoever applied to non-legato notes. That's the whole point of 'auto' (of course, with these settings it's no longer a polyphonic synth, but rather a mono-legato synth...so perhaps what you're saying applies to poly + legato and glide? This is all a bit confusing, tbh!)

mono + legato! I hear a bit of portamento with the setting described - solo mode, portamento auto, porta slider 0, playing non legato notes - try playing a note followed by a note 2 octaves up, there's a vey small portamento there (although I don't know WHY someone would play like that)

You should consider making (and selling) a collection of patches like this. You´ll probably make some money, since there are no competition for good patch collections for the J-8 so far that I´m aware of. And more people, like myself, will get a more fair impression and realise the potential of what the VST-instrument is capable of, before one considers investing the time needed to master it enough, like you apparently have.

Maybe I will do a small patch bank someday, but I'm better in copying patches than creating! Already noticed that I can really recreate the other bass from Relax too (the one that plays E C# D). Just need to collect more Jupiter-8 inspiration!

Well, why don´t you go through and copy patches then from all the greatest hits made with the Jupiter 8, and sell to the masses what we want. As a bonus you´ll probably end up in the history books yourself for your significant service in documenting an important part of the history of modern music.

Not bad, actually. Yes, legato and a bit reverb on top to put it right in the mix and it´s rather close.

Well, at least if the sounds are allowed to have a bit of the typical 80's aesthetic, you can actually find quite useful sounds in many sets. Often it helps to simply turn off the chorus and double the sound instead. Possibly adjust the calibration knobs of the synthesizer a bit.

How do you like the following demo (sorry, self-promotion... )? You can download all the sounds from it for free, and there are some presets in there that also sound a bit rougher.
