Differences in SSD drive tech..?

Sorry this is a bit vague but... I remember reading some comments, I think on reddit, where people where arguing the value of a cheap m.2 nvme etc drive that was on offer. Someone made a comment about it being old technology (maybe something about triple layer, NAND...) and that the way it worked with a buffer meant if you filled the buffer with too many changes you lost storage or something... Insinuating it was ok for storage of files you don't change or delete very often but not for an OS drive. I think. It was late at night...

Anyway, looking at drives now and can't find the comment or anything really relating to this notion. Did I dream it or is this a thing? Looking at a second drive for my laptop which would mainly be for my music collection though could be used for DAW/audiofiles too so don't want to buy cheap and find I'm limited by it.

Lots of differences...
If it is a drive just to store data and not to keep writing stuff, not much to worry as anything goes...
IF it is the drive for the operational system or something you keep written data, then get a TLC model
and NOT a QLC!
You can go fine with a GEN3 TLC drive, no need for GEN4.

I dunno about sticking with spinning rust , the array of four pm9a3s in raid-0 I've got one machine at work is adequately fast ( 10gb/s susatined write 23gb/s sustained read )

HDD isn't even an option in my laptop, only m.2 slots.

I do have a little pile of old 2.5" drives which i use for random backups with a £5 usb-to-sata cable, not my primary backups obvs but handy to have around.

It depends on many factors like the controller, how is tweaked and implemented...
