What's the one feature your DAW is still lacking compared to the competition?

i would like cubase 12 to be able to map more than 8 quick control to vst (like studio 1), i would like cubase to not stop recording/audio when adding a new vst
(like any daw else)
would like cubase to have oversampling options by vst slot (like reaper),
would like cubase to have horizontal rack effect like ableton live.
add these 4 features and to me it would be perfect, i wont need anything else, anything else would bonuses.

The one that irritates me the most that Ableton Live lacks: the controls don't respond to scroll wheel, like most DAWs and plugins do it and it just so anachronistic

Bitwig can't open other software midi ports.
This really prevents me from being able to use other midi sources and destinations like rtpmidi or standalone processors/generators. Often I will also do extra routing between midi devices outside of the host simultaneously, which is not possible while Bitwig is attached to the device.

Is this a Windows problem? You have to setup a generic device of course, but it has never been a problem here, I do it all the time…DRMR wrote: Thu Jun 23, 2022 7:57 pm Bitwig can't open other software midi ports.

No, I do not use windows. Normally I route MIDI inside JACK using a2jmidid.

So its a Linux problem? Did you talk about this with Bitwigs support? Its certainly not a design limitation of the Bitwig app…DRMR wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 8:14 amNo, I do not use windows. Normally I route MIDI inside JACK using a2jmidid.

It is. They use rawmidi and thereby entirely lock all midi devices. Also because of this they cannot connect to software ports.
The only (partial) solution is to manually create virtual midi ports, which is tedious, requires root access (you need to load a kernel module to do this), has to be done manually every time. Has to be redone when one wants to add a new port. Are unnamed so nearly impossible to track. And BW exposes these as 16 separate ports instead of a single one. Oh and when I tried to use these with MTC it completely failed. And this doesn't solve the issue of routing between hardware ports outside of bitwig at the same time.
Example of the kind of midi routing I normally do a lot:

So it is a Linux only problem and you want them to support Jack.DRMR wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 9:39 amIt is. They use rawmidi and thereby entirely lock all midi devices. Also because of this they cannot connect to software ports.

The one feature you are missing is then something else, its Jack support on Linux…
Now your claim makes sense…

Doesn't have to be jack. Could be regular ALSA software ports. Jack midi would be even better since it is cross platform (yes, jack runs on other operating systems than Linux), but plain software ports would be a huge improvement already.Tj Shredder wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 1:37 pm So it is a Linux only problem and you want them to support Jack.

The only point of using rawmidi is typically for sysex, which most users never need. I certainly don't need my bitwig to send sysex to anything. I use a tonne of outboard gear, but none of it needs sysex messages from my DAW. It would be preferable it I could have flexible routing and have more control of where my midi is coming from or going to.
Talking about jack, bitwigs transport controls are really bad. The resolution of its internal transport is also not on par with many other hosts, which makes certain plugins behaviour that rely on precise transport very erratic.
It sounds like I'm really shitting on bitwig here, but I'm not and just want it to get better.
As a DAW I really like the workflow, but the problems I describe really prevent me from using it effectively.

I would love a more comprehensive sampler in Cubase. Not just stand alone, as a plugin, but also the way plugins can speak to each other like in Ableton. I love the way you can use lfo's and expression control settings to modulate parameters on plugins. This kind of interplay is totally missing in Cubase and i do miss it (that's why i also have a copy of Ableton).
Now for Ableton; the thing i miss the most is actually the Control Room from Cubase

ARA is a must have.
Disappointed that FL Studio and MuLab does not have ARA implementation even on their new major update releases.
Multi-touch is a near must have for my DAW.
Disappointed that Reaper and Cubase are not Multi-touch capable.
max for Cubase/FL studio/Studio One/Reaper
Ableton Live gets all the love for M4L.
If only Live had ARA and multi-touch and a couple more minor features I would switch to it just for the M4L!

Really??
I have seen perhaps 10% love but 90% hate for it´s quirkiness and bugginess...
From what I´ve seen most M4L users would give their legs if M4L devices would be available natively...

^^^
I would give my right toe if the M4L devices were available as a VST.
Yea, my right toe as it hurts occasionally. My left toe is fine.
Just hope they are not careless and amputate my left toe.
Had no idea that the M4L devices were buggy.
It's actually good news as now I no longer have to lust over Ableton Live Suite.

I don´t think the devices themselves but the implementation into Live...Kalamata Kid wrote: Mon Jun 27, 2022 12:28 pm ^^^

From my personal experience: If Live crashed it was 99.9% loading or using an M4L device...

I just hope Studio One adds live looping to the performance page and if they do that it will be nearly the perfect DAW it has basically everything else.
Although its really weird that im about to buy a new computer and I'm going to get a Mac for the first time and its starting to dawn on me Ill now have access to Logic which already has looping clips.
