Are there any great albums (iyo) from the past 5 years that you play on regular repeat? (I'm on the hunt for new music!)

Hello everyone,

Apologies for the thread which may well lend itself to posts that contain video links and/or lists of favourite musicians/ albums (although many at KVR seem to quite like lists!).

But are there any really exceptional albums (in your opinion), of any genre, that you've bought during the past 5 years and which you like so much that you play them regularly on repeat?

3 'repeat play' albums that I've bought in the past few years are:

1) the rather funky and soulful 2019 "Kiwanuka" record by London-based multi-instrumentalist Michael Kiwanuka.
Great arrangements and percussion (imo) and also a Mercury Prize winner:

2) the surprisingly rockier album (compared to most of his pervioius crooning ones) called "Further" by Sheffield balladeer Richard Hawley.
Still got several mellow, soulful and almost rockabilly type songs on the alubm however:

3) "Mordechai" by Texan 'fusion' band Khruangbin:

TBH, any of Khruangbin's albums appeal to me as they combine excellent (often dubby) bass guitar lines, hypnotic percussion and extremely catchy (surf ?) guitar noodlings.

But I'll go for the most recent full album from 2020 :)

Also, unlike the first 2 nominations on my list (Michael Kiwanuka and Richard Hawley) which I think make great driving music, the Khruangbin albums are lovely at home when chilling (imo).
Then again, each to their own...

And so, are there any exceptional and recent albums (past 5 years or so) that you often have on repeat?

Cheers,

A few definite favourites off the top of my head:

Aleah's posthumously released self-titled album is an absolute beauty that I regularly return to:

Kalpataru Tree: Rhythmic Fractals of Earth's Imagination
A really nice laidback album with a dubby backbone, guitar meanderings and a pinch of psychedelia:
(and to think he almost quit making music after the album he did before this)

Phone Booth Robbers: Notes to Yourself
One of my favourite albums in any genre not just from the past 5 years, but at least the past decade. Released in late 2021.

Utopia was a nice breath of fresh air after some quite difficult albums (especially Vulnicura, but of course there's a reason why the album is like it is). Vespertine is still better than all other Björk albums combined (I just listened to it again the other day).

Excellent - many thanks vurt and Paul.
Some lovely music there :)

(Further recommendations of favorite recent repeat play albums from other KVR members are also welcome, cheers).

ooh residents released stuff during lockdown, so they can be included

my issue, is trying to remember when things happened, my perception of time is totally screwed, so some newer records seem to have more history to them in my head, and are therefore older...
then there are others (goat) that are eternally fresh, so could be newer :ud:

also, i think goat should always be mentioned, just in case they are unknown to someone :)

like hellung, definitely seem like something ive been listening to for years, but no, it seems they arrived on my radar during lockdown too

does no one buy new music anymore?
i don't as much as i used to, but im not in the city, hanging about in record shops and bars to hear new stuff as much!! and im old, id hoped some more city dwellers and young folk would be feeding us older small town folk with new culture

Haha!
Well, tbf, there's something to be said for a (currently) short and sweet thread where only a handful of us are sharing music that we really would recommend rather than a thread with far too many half-hearted suggestions.

Either way, I'm more than happy with the suggestions by you, WR and Paul above,

Cheers :D

I don't listen to full albums a lot i must admit. I find it difficult to ride the less interesting parts as well. But i must say, there are a few that i really enjoy from time to time. What comes to mind are Wave from Patrick Watson, Metromony Forever from Metromony and my own Restless album (because it's only 5 tracks, haha) (artist name boy bianchi).

Have fun listening and i hope you find some stuff that inspires you.

Thank you stargazer20:
I'll look forward to checking those out (and I already have one of Metronomy's prior albums "The English Riviera" so it'll be good to see how their sound has developed between 2011 to 2019).
