I should have included my stats: Logic 10.6.3 / Catalina

The second instance didn't load properly for me either - it doesn't crash Logic anymore, as plugins are run in a different process, but it definitely doesn't load and is having some kind of crashing problem.

M1Pro, Logic 10.7.4, Monterey...

The whole 'Technical Info' section is very interesting!

And your work is complete bonkers, btw, thanks for that!

The people running this project originally said they won't be emulating synths that are still on the market. But they changed their minds and are working on the TI range. They actually sent an email to Kemper, and he never gave a firm response whether he was okay with this or not, he only said the firmware/OS is protected by law and cannot be redistributed.

In the gaming world emulators only get released after the original hardware is no longer on the market. They're very useful for software preservation. Otherwise these things would get lost forever once the hardware breaks down and spares are no longer available.

Which is the relevant response, as that is what the emulator is running.

@numerouno - Regarding this (apologies if it's been mentioned earlier):
If you have multiple ROMs (e.g Virus B & Virus C) the ROM that is chosen is not predictable so put only one ROM into the folder at a time.
Could there maybe be a menu on the UI where you could choose from a menu or switch between which rom is loaded if it finds multiple roms in the same folder as the plugin ?

I've been trying to find what the differences are between the two roms - the presets are different (or maybe just a different order ?!) but aside from that are they actually the same thing (so the above wouldn't actually be needed) ?

Right. Because it's not his decision. Provided copyrighted roms are not included, or trademarks used, an emulation is legal. His only decision, at that point, is whether he wants to sell the ROMS with an emulation license, or have someone create a non-emulated native plugin, which would provide significantly better performance.

That's entirely false. EG Neo Geo support appeared in MAME in 1998, but the system remained on the market until 2004. Lots of those old games are also not only still sold by the likes of Sega, Capcom, et all, but have been continually sold, in some form, throughout. Many people seem to forget 80's games were barely a decade old when the first emulators appeared, and would still have been in use in some arcades.

The B has slightly less features, and uses less DSP (and thus uses less CPU).

This means you should always use the C rom, unless you notice your CPU struggles, in which case use the B rom, which will lighten the load slightly. Support for the Virus A rom would further reduce the amount of CPU required, with the trade off being less polyphony and even less features than the B (no reverb etc).

there is already such a menu-ROM-selector-thing as of v1.2.19
but not working yet - only cosmetically afaik
so it seems to be planned
I've been trying to find what the differences are between the two roms
higher voicecount (32 vs 24) afaik
and some more parameters in C (not sure)
(a moog style filter, more mod sources/destinations...)

theres a comparison chart somewhere...here for example:

Thank you both :)

There actually is a dopdown menu in the upper right of the GUI, but, I'm not entirely sure what it does.

I have an i7 4790K (ten years old?) CPU, and I get around 280 MIPS when I run the virusTestConsole.exe - which is more than double what is needed to run the Virus C ROM (136 MIPS needed). I just thought I'd post that up in case anybody was having issues with the emulator in the past, and wondered if they needed to upgrade their CPU - you probably don't!

Post

Did you try to up the voice count, or the unison voices? I had some issues then, with my last CPU. Had a score of over 200 in the test console as well, but, in reality, the Virus rom in the emulator was too much of a CPU hit.

My current CPU (i5-11600K) runs it without any issues though.

Anyone know where I might be able to get the ROMs for this emulator? Would I actually have to physically have on hand the actual hardware synthesizers to get the ROMs?

It's the first result when you Google for it...
