This thread seems like a good place to ask: as a (semi)modular newbie should I get a Behringer 3-Tier Synth Rack, Including K-2, Neutron and Pro 1?

Or save up for a Moog Sound Studio Mother-32, DFAM and Subharmonicon?

Opinions on pros and cons appreciated. The objective is purely to have fun!

I would like to think that the moog stuff is better as well as more costly. Of course, i
don't have any moog or behringer stuff so
i cant say. From what i hear anyway, folks
are happy with both. So depends on what
you want to do I guess.

Looks like only the Pro 1 in the Behringer rack has a sequencer while all three of the Moogs have one sort or another so I think the Sound Studio would probably be more “fun”. I think I might be looking for an easy way to get into Modular without actually committing.

Damn, 1 more week.foosnark wrote: Tue Jul 05, 2022 8:46 pm I had an Analog Drive for a while. I pretty much had it permanently beefing up my Reface CS.
A tease from Make Noise:
The glyphs make me think of unison detune in Serum. Or maybe scan on a harmonic oscillator or resonant EQ or something... hmmm.
I went to the live channel today and saw there’s a Carlos staying up in the EU. I hope he realizes there’s another week to go too.
Shab, Maths 3?

Yeah, I was tossing-out a guess as it has been awhile (the current one is v2), and a number of manufacturers are making adjustments to their product line(s) based on chip availability/shortages. That said, looking further at the graphic, I have to wonder:elxsound wrote: Sat Jul 09, 2022 1:45 amDamn, 1 more week.foosnark wrote: Tue Jul 05, 2022 8:46 pm

Shab, Maths 3?
1. Was it made/provided by Make Noise, or Perfect Circuit?
2. Is it actually relevant to the forthcoming product, and if so, to what degree?
3. Or, is it just a random graphic, (or a deliberate mis-direct) just to get/keep people guessing?
My initial observation was (and remains) that IF provided by Make Noise as a "clue", the dotted yellow lines are significant, and remind me of the double line street lane dividers. The dash meaning you 'can' pass. The radical drop-off of the left part of the image, implies or alludes to (me) some manner of 'attenuation', 'redirect' (flow), or "high-pass/low-pass", if not a possible "brick-wall" limiter. The steep upward and downward slope(s) of the right side image appear as a 'roof', or top-limit(er), with the gap between them, appearing to allow whatever those vertical lines represent, to potentially 'pass' through that gap, or 'peak'.
Hence, a "band-pass" filter, or "frequency shifter" (if the yellow lines are fluid/adjustable), or even an "EQ". Sooo
Notwithstanding, the thing no one can predict or expect, which is more than likely, what will materialize.

I can see the outline of UA, United Artists, so obviously a bunch of Bond Themed modules like Jaws, a trance gate that takes bites out of your audio.

It it a U? Looks more like an L. Maybe they're moving?

Sticking with your desire for it to be "fun", and your (admitted) inexperience with semi-modular/modular, the stand-out factor is ~ what will make the kinds of sounds you want to make/hear, that will qualify as "fun" (e.g. 'rewarding' to some degree), without being overwhelmingly frustrating to achieve? Not being obsessed with the "need to make music, bro", is a plus.SHall1000 wrote: Fri Jul 08, 2022 10:51 pm Looks like only the Pro 1 in the Behringer rack has a sequencer while all three of the Moogs have one sort or another so I think the Sound Studio would probably be more “fun”. Like Pekpro, I don't have any of these things either, though the Neutron had peaked my interest for its potential, but everything in my racks, very deliberately, has that. The DFAM, however, is still very much 'on my list', and not as a "drum machine". If it is a consideration, the Moogs are much more of an investment, and will have a greater potential for holding their value, as such.
Further, as a 'set', they (Moog) are intended to have a degree of homogeneity/continuity that the Behringer grouping lacks (IMHO), but IF you really just want to explore semi-modular/modular, you can't really go 'wrong' with either, as either will give you a lot of tonal variety, and interactive/manipulation potential(s), that will keep you busy exploring for as long as it keeps your interest, to work within the constraints of each 'system'.
{aside} Time limits on those deals notwithstanding, I would definitely spend however much time you deem appropriate, to watching/listening to youtube vids on each of those 'components' individually, to determine which ones make the kinds of sounds YOU want to explore, and what combination of those components would maximize that experience. [2c]
Were I just starting out (and were not as spoiled)... I would lean towards a Nifty case, and put these in it.

The other thing to note is you can trade up, down or out at any stage.
Online second hand places like Reverb, eBay or Gumtree mean you can get a fair proportion of your money back selling stuff on. So maybe get your fingers wet with the Behringer kit and sell it on six months later for the Moog or maybe in that time you’ll know more what you want.

you could try getting your feet wet with a single unit maybe? grab a west pest or even the east beast, not much outlay, but enough for plenty of fun and an idea if you can deal with the patching and unpatching, or if it's not for you.
just one of those is a great intro, to the the modular world (or semi) and should you decide to level up, each one is going to add a load of options to whatever you get next
