Chips degrade over time. It's not a problem at all for people who run stock, but for those who overclock/undervolt that may be a factor.
That's not at all always true. Stock and default settings of some vendors auto clock out of the box...and are far from optimal in some cases and by so wiill degrade your cpu worse than doing an proper undervolt. From personal experience ASUS motherboards on the 5th gen Intel if IIRC...

Well, I tried to do some overclocking in 2010s and had terrible luck with all CPUs I had... Silicon lottery is a thing, and you may not win it. These days CPUs have even less headroom than they did before. And people on the internet overestimate the clocks, or stability of the system very often.

There is always a risk of unstable operation, that's what you need to acknowledge when doing overclocking/undervolting. It may be not obvious, it could be rare crash once a month, that doesn't reveal itself on stress test. That's #1 reason why I advise against it.
Well sorry to hear you have had terrible luck with all the CPU's you had. I have had some poor silicon in the years but mostly it have worked out fine.

My current rig is a decent OC i2500k and have been running stable as a rock for 8+ years...... and still no signs of degradation. The only major unstable issue I ever got was due to a buggy update of a plugin, the system was heavily tested when I overclocked it under a extrem heatwave so it was during the worst conditions, after that I was pretty certain and it was quite easy to track down any error when only doing manual updates...it would have less work if I had not update so many plugins at once thoug... :D

Pretty much the same with my daily gaming rig Ryzen 2600 but I only choose to run the my custom OC profile when I need a little extra in some games...when it makes an actuall difference, sure there's less headroom these days, but it's not always about having higher clocks. It seems that it got more common with all the default boost and auto functions in BIOS to run things with much higher voltage than they actually might need and sometimes it can be a good idea to see if one's setup really need that much voltage for the that amount of performance... I mean if one are concerned with degradation over time.

My Linux 5600G daily setup is slightly undervolted and pulls merly 30w in most conditions be it streaming 1080p video or 480p popup while running 2 browser with loads o tabs and what not and idles about 18w....thats for the whole system pull from the wall.

If there's a random crash once a month then i would rather question what auto updates and background tasks and services is running on the system, specially when working on a project...if it's something that is unstable due to OC then it should be easy to replicate, well it should also be less of a problem if it's due to a plugin or software but the more things running by itself doing whatever they like whenever...well then tracking down the cause gets much more problematic...every update is a potential risk of a bug being introduced.

Personally I would never advice anyone not doing some research about their gear and what can possibly be done, if it peaks their interesse.... if one don't succed one can just go back to stock and in the end one can have at least learned something about how the BIOS works...

What a blast from the past. Sandy bridge were good overclockers indeed (from what I've heard).

At this time I had an amd phenom 955.

What a terrible chip. Not only it was slow compared to intel, it also didn't overclock well and didn't support SSE 4. As far as I remember, it was extremely temperature sensitive and would crash if temperature went over 60C. As a consequence it was hard to cool, because cooling efficiency is proportional to temperature delta.

Also, my motherboard didn't have LLC and voltages did drop significantly under load leading to crashes.

After all this disappointment it kinda worked @ 3.6 compared to 3.2 stock. But I would get a random crash or BSOD every 2 weeks or so. After couple of these I went stock and never ever touch overclocking again.

In deed, I have yet to go full hardcore OC on it since it's my main workstation, I kept a low voltage (BIOS set slightly above default but CPU-Z and other apps reports it being default, so not sure if that's a BIOS bug or what was going on there, either way it's not a big difference IIRC)

I know I didn't hit the jackpot on the silicon but it's a decent uplift. Ended up with 4.1GHz being stable and IIRC with the fans going on medium speed it averaged about 79c on full Prime95 torture load for hours in a room ambience temp at 28c during a heat wave (while shifting instructions it could spike to 84 in short burst)

....I choose, if possible to do most hardware related stuff during summer when it's really warm, then one can be somwhat confident that as long as everything is in working condition one will never reach those temps ever again... most old houses in sweden aren't really built for summer conditions of that of Spain or Italy and even if one got an AC it's a questionable expense these days with electricity cost being what they are. Also, static electricity gremlins during winter are a real thing here....no joke.

I don't think I have got the temps over 70c in a 25-27c room temp when working on a project for hours with no CPU left over another plugin...with the fans set really low. I dind't really win the silicon lottery big time, but it's decent. Prime 95 temps also drops alot when the room is under 25c...during winter it's hard to get it above 65c.

I think I could get it to do 4.5GHz with a higher voltage and with increased fan speeds I reckon the temps would turn out to be the same...however, that extra CPU power will be of no use when not being able to focus on working due to fan noise being noticeable and that's enuff to be annoying to me.
However, when I get a new new setup I will probably revisit it and feed it some more voltage to the i2500k and see what it can do for real...as long as the electricity costs are within reason... :D

Before I got the Ryzen 2600 I can't recall I even interacted with anything AMD since my Atlhon XP days...but I read and heard mostly the same story as yours. I'm glad the Intel domination days are over, things are for sure much more interresting now and decent performance more accessible for average hobbyists, obviously could be better without all other dystopian things going on. But hey, at least we aren't stuck with overpriced 4 cores cpu's anymore.

I'm really looking forward to see what AMD's next gen will do for DAW workstations...if 5800X3D does this well due to the big V-Cache then one can't be blamed for getting kinda' hyped about a shrinked node that will have that cache with higher clocks and DDR5....

One can just hope the launch goes smooth and doesn't have too much bugs and that the low end/entry level don't end up being too expensive... if they can't keep the costs down I hope they will release some more 5000-series cpu's with V-cache, like a 5600X3D and 5700X3D... the average audio hobbyists needs to get some love now after all the covid and crypto bros punched everyone else in the balls. :pray:

I wonder if I should wait or upgrade my R5 2600 gaming rig with a 5600X or 5700X and use that for DAW works while I wait, the R5 2600 is not doing any better than my i2500k when working in Reaper...and I kind of run into the CPU wall a bit too early to be comfortable to render or freeze things. It's tempting, even more so because I will be able to continue to run win7 on a 5000-series cpu...will probably be the last series that can...I guess. 8)


What are you running these days? Not the phenom 955 still I hope :scared: :hihi:

I was just about to upgrade my sons R5-2600 gaming rig with a 5600X, when I saw the X3D release, and given AMD's history of 'migrating' such things downward, I'm holding off for a 5600X3D. :tu: ... I don't do any games, but run a 5700X (32GB @3200 RAM) on my "production" machine, and it is quite adequate for my needs, though a 5700X3D may bring some benefits.


p.s. I still run two Phenom II 965's (on Windows-7) networked machines, for storage/back-ups. They work.

Bought i5 12600 not too long ago. Decent CPU and not too expensive. Before that I had i3 8100 which I bought as a temporary thing (and would buy an i7 if I needed more CPU, which I didn't need at all).

Didn't notice that much difference to be honest. Code does compile and run faster though, especially multithreaded.

I still have 955 with the motherboard. I could gift it to someone, but gifting THAT is almost an insult.

Makes me wonder if the German magazine mixed up the models and made a typo, I mean it's a huge difference. It confirms my first guess that 5800X3D would be worse in DSP but better with VI/Kontakt than the regular 5800X (and perhaps even the 5900X which seems to be the case).. while my wallet prefered the German Magazines test to be correct I'm happy that my predictions was not that far off.

Question is how their test differ, unless it's a typo mix up, either way, I trust SCAN more. Thanks for posting.

...also, glad to hear SLiC got a proper build. :party:

AMD are brandishing a bunch of 5s for Intel:

DDR5 only, PCIe V5, 5nm, AM5, 5.5GHz
Compatible with AM4 coolers and integrated Radeon RDNA 2 graphics engine. Later this year 3D vcache versions anticipated.

Maybe Fabfilter stuff benefits from 3D cache.

Could be the case, I mean it's designed to improve real time heavy graphic processing performance afterall, soooo... Fabfilter GUI vs ReaXComp GUI ...I guess :clown: :hihi:
