Cool and thanks for sharing. :tu:

That is a cool device. I've been looking for something like these (not magnetic) for the Cajons I make but those I have found are pretty expensive with little to go on (in terms of what they will sound like). So I just keep using a microphone.

whyterabbyt wrote: Thu Jul 07, 2022 10:20 amJust the bog-standard cheapo disc elements. Ive got a few that are about 3.5cm? diameter, so built a couple with them, but most of the ones Ive just made are the smallest (1.5cm?) ones, and a couple of an in-between size. The larger they are, the better the frequency response, I believe.
I dip them in liquid rubber to reduce the tinny-ness a wee bit, but the main thing wrt bass response is that they're very high impedance, and are basically HPF'd on regular inputs, so, in the absence of an appropriate preamp, I run them into a Hi-Z input. (though Ive also got two Mikrophonie Eurorack modules)

some info on the impedance thing here:

Thanks for the info. I think I paid about $10 for 2 or 3 and they are small, maybe 2cm total size. I generally run my decent stomp through the same gear as my guitar and it sounds great. Size and perhaps undipped are the issues. Might give a larger size a try.
That article/interview with Tim Prebble really got me going deeper into contact mics, back when it came out. Excellent tips/tricks. Tim is an inspiration.

There is a reference to an interview with Alan Splet & Anne Krober about their work on the film Dune, that link appears to be dead (in my browser), but this one works.

These are not cheap (though cheaper than some), and are excellent.

Not seen the Organic Audio contact mics before, but another possible source (one in the UK) is Jez Riley French.

I did build some weighted and waterproofed piezos a few weeks back, might post some pictures of the various ones Ive built in the DIY thread. Havent built magnets into any, but its actually something I had thought of... Ive got small neodyniumiumiumwhatever magnets that work fine 'loose', they're magnetic enough 'through' the piezo to hold stuff in place.

Those HOSA MIT-219 adaptors on the Organic Audio website are a useful option with piezos if you dont have Hi-Z or 1/4" inputs on your recording device, Ive got one as a backup.

Last weekend I worked on some rack plumbing; made a couple of 4-channel snakes that run through the back of my modular case to TRS patchbay. Now I need to solder up a module to balance/amplify signal from/to minijacks. Hoping for 8 channels in 4hp but it's a bit tight!

Seem to have fixed the A-131 VCA by swapping out the CA3080. Input 2 seems to have a wee more noise/hum with its pot full up than Input 1 is, though, not sure if that's normal. Still usable enough at lower levels.

Recorded a track Saturday morning. Realized I need to be more diligent about bass practice if I don't want sore fingers during a session. Calluses can disappear pretty fast.

Then I decided the end of it didn't transition into the next track (already recorded) as well as I'd like, so I went back to mess with the ending until it did.

Then decided I didn't like the way the bass part at the start fit with the rest. So I went back over that bit with Velvet Machine to smear the attacks into a more cello-like sound, which worked extremely well.

Then I decided it was too short and needed more of an intro, so I recorded another session that smoothly slides into the rest of it despite patching everything from scratch.

Been working on a new tune for the next CD.

The tracks are completed, getting ready to do the mix after posting some letters, syllables and consonants.....
(Maybe a photo or 2)

Mixed, then re-mixed the tune.
Been very pleased with the direction of the most current tunes.

Now planning a release.....

I thought I'd update some Acustica products after receiving an email about the new core 18 and CPU efficiency improvements.
The following day (today), I opened their downloader/authorisation manager only to find no updates. :x
