Actually even on mac some developers do their own sh#^.
Not everyone puts their presets in presets and we all know the famous example of a developer putting presets in the plugin folder.

If you think about it, that's exactly where that stuff should reside though. As you mentioned, ProgramData and AppData/Roaming are hidden folders, which the normal user will never get in touch with. And, presets could very well be seen as your "documents", as if you work in a text editor, and save your documents. Those are user files, and Documents is a valid folder for that. Many programs save their user files in that folder by default.

AppData/Roaming should rather be used for program's confugration files, i.e. stuff that the normal user may never need to access or change manually.

Surely easy backup is the key here, which is why Documents makes sense to me.

Same here, mine is automatically backed up to OneDrive. I didn't even need to set it up, it just happens, and it saves me a tonne of time when I'm setting up a new computer. For the longest time I railed against being told where to put my stuff but I eventually grew up and just went with it.

Actually, you can configure that behavior of the OneDrive client in the setup after Windows was installed, and you boot it up for the first time. It's a bit confusing though, and a lot of people will just leave it on by default, because they don't understand the setting, and, that's probably what Microsoft wants anyway.

It can be even dangerous, e.g. the Windows desktop with all the icons will be synced by default as well. I read about at least 2 occasions where that led to people having deleted all their desktop icons. So, especially the setting to synchronize the desktop should be handled with care...

Yet another good reason never to be so f**king lazy as to leave stuff on your desktop. The only icon on mine is the Recycle Bin.

Then you have no reason to sync your desktop anyway, as you an always easily restore it, when you only have a single icon on it. ;)

I use an application which can restore the desktop icons and order if, for example, a full screen application somehow destroys the arrangement (already happened several times here...).

I'd be the exact opposite - I take photos, leave them lying around on my drive(s) for a few months/years, then delete them. Honestly, I don't know why I take them at all. They are mostly of weather, with the occasional architectural shot but taking them is a total waste of time.

ah, the ones i keep on there, is just my granddaughter. :)
most of the other stuff, like yourself, gets deleted as it is indeed meaningless (for the most part, there may be odd shots of a friend's art before she sells the original too)

As blunt as ever but a very good point. Not sure taking photos is a waste of time. Its practice for taking good photos. But culling them mercilessly is also important because most of them are truly trash.

One of the things I like most about being married to the Apple ecosystem is that as soon as I take a photo, it can become part of my Apple TV screen saver, which I have set to play when I’m listening to music. Some of them are junk, or weird stuff like serial numbers or car damage, but even they can be fun and spark a memory. The photo app uses some AI to make little memory montages. They are almost always cheezy, but also pretty great.

FYI - I reached out to GForce about the preset locations. Without copying and pasting the message (I wouldn't want to do that without asking) I'll just summarize in saying that they're aware the current-state user presets are not in an ideal location and will allow users to choose their own paths when they update their browser.

back to the topic, I've played a few days with this new GForce SEM emulation, and it sounds nice, well rounded, with a creamy filter and interesting and simple to dial modulation options. I've compared it with bx_oberhausen that I'm using for a year or so, and they definitely differ in sound, but not that much, both are on point regarding features and sound. You can get the similar if not the same patch created in GForce SEM in bx_oberhausen, but not the other way around, since the later have a lot of additional features that GForce SEM lacks. Personally, I like sound of the GForce SEM a bit more in general, but it's not night and day difference. And what I like with bx version is that you can get beyond that to some new places. The biggest difference I've encountered is in the filter itself. The bx_oberhausen have a lot more resonance to play with and does sound different. Although waveforms also differ a bit, it's not that stark like the filter. Ranges of the modulations are also different, but that's kinda expected, although you can get to the spots you like in both and match them one to one, no problem there. So for me, bx is still a keeper. It could be that GForce SEM is a more realistic representation of the original instrument, but 50 years later, to me that doesn't matter that much to pull the plug. Both are great simple instruments that can get a lot of usage in any musical context, and are fun to play and listen to.
