Well, to me Surge is one of the best VSTi plugins of all time, period. I rate it as high as Zebra and prefer it to Vital even if Vital is still an awesome synth. Surge is very versatile and special.ayndryw wrote: Fri Apr 15, 2022 7:51 pm Surge is probably the best, it is better than most paid VST synths IMO. Full bucket VSTS are great.
Yes, Triple Cheese sounds very unique. Maybe that's just me, but I wish Urs would release a paid version of this with some extra features.zachy9 wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 7:09 am Someone mentioned U-he in general but I'd like to specifically shout-out Triple Cheese, which despite its bizarre branding is amazing for plucky, physical-model type sounds.

Even if true, irrelevant, since the title of the thread isn't "free instruments better than any commercially available stuff Anx has."AnX wrote: Thu Apr 14, 2022 6:43 am Nothing, there is nothing free that is better than any commercially available stuff I have.
Not an instrument, but is a great free effect.
Anyway, good picks here. I would add:
Synth: Podolski, Abakos, MiniMogue
Guitar: Ample Guitar Lite, Spicy Guitar, Shreddage 3 Stratus (electric)
Bass: Ample Bass Lite
Sax: DVS Sax (very basic but nice overall sound IMO)
Trumpet: Norrland Trumpet
Grand Piano: Ivy 162
Upright Piano: Midnight Upright
Organ: Combo F
Drums: MT Power Drum Kit, Steven Slate 5 Lite
Orchestra: VSCO 2, Palette, Project Sam
Miscellaneous: VS Congas, Chau Gongs, Thai Gongs, Ethereal Winds harp, Angel's harp, Nu Guzheng (SampleScience...Chinese guitar)
And instruments with a diff twist or sound to them (like felt pianos etc): check KLANG and Spitfire's LABS stuff and the Pianobook site, but warning, some require full version of Kontakt, so only "free" if you have that
Really it's amazing how much legit good stuff there is out there for free!

I believe it's already there. It's called Zebra. At least as far as I know, it has those physical modeling options. (Could be mistaken, I don't have it myself.)crickey13 wrote: Sun Apr 17, 2022 3:17 pm Yes, Triple Cheese sounds very unique. Kind of, yeah, the focus is a bit different though. You can definitely get Zebra to do that kind of stuff, but it lacks the immediacy and the quirky feature set of Triple Cheese.SeBaer wrote: Tue May 10, 2022 12:26 pm I believe it's already there. While Zebralette is a pretty nice synth, it doesn't have the physical modelling capabilities that Triple Cheese and full Zebra have. It's rather a straight forward subtractive synth.BBFG# wrote: Wed May 11, 2022 6:56 pmZebralette?SeBaer wrote: Tue May 10, 2022 12:26 pmI believe it's already there. It's called Zebra. Seems painfully limited. Not even ADSR controls. Just a volume knob.

Just that there's such a range of sounds and engines that make it worth the download. Pretty good system that if you need to edit or write your own that you would want to buy the engine controls.
I didn't see in the subject line where that was the main concern though.
So for what it is, it's completely painless!
And I like the sounds it has much better than some of the others that have been mentioned.
