And where the visual and musical merge is the hypnotic world of Circular Midi Sequencing, a relatively fresh approach to musical note-making. This technique has infiltrated the minds at music tech lab Playtronica to develop the Orbita sequencer. Several other heady mathematical musicians, who are programming and developing contemporary sequencers and apps are also using this foundation. At present, you can incorporate this technique via hardware, software extensions within a DAW, and even via a web app.
The moment seems right to shift off the rectangular sequencer grid and to free midi notes into a new space. Circular Sequencers engage a more concentric path, where notes and dynamic variables loop in orbits and are represented in colorful patterns and mandalas that can trigger synaesthesia- where sight and sound intermesh. With its prominent turntable-like face, Orbita was devised to access this head state and open up playful instances of musical collaboration. Users can construct multi “orbit” note formations with magnetic discs that rotate and can be dialed into the composition organically with analog tempo control. For those unfamiliar with hardware sequencers, the feeling is intuitive and direct, where patterns unfold like a strategy game that shifts with each play. More seasoned electronic musicians regain a sense of spontaneity and a refreshed visual connection to their midi programs. This lays the ground for a stratum of electronic expression that is very personalized and gestural. Orbita’s “scratch mode” allows for manual note playing with hands turning the control platter, forward or backward. All together, the Orbita experience is both hypnotic and meditative, connecting the eyes and ears of the performer to their aural creations. Notes and sounds become colors, patterns, and compositions that bounce pleasingly around the senses. With deeper Orbita software developments planned, the device serves to stand alone in the hardware sequencing field.

That's easy, the length could be represented in a segmented way. Each line represents the length of a clip / note loop, and the position of the line represents the time on the timeline (clockwise). The line contains the notes the instrument plays or the sample which is played. As you roll over the lines, information pops up on a display to tell you what data it contains. Each spiral represent a sequence, spiral 1, 2, 3, etc, which would be played through.fairlyclose wrote: Wed Aug 03, 2022 9:16 pm Circular is just another way of showing a loop, so is hopeless for a daw unless the daw is just for playing loops. Is probably hopeless for multitracking - think how would you show a circular form of 27 tracks of varying lengths for example
thanks that makes more sense and seems worth exploring as there could be contexts where it is a better visualisation of the pieceTHE INTRANCER wrote: Thu Aug 04, 2022 7:47 pmThat's easy, the length could be represented in a segmented way.
