How does Guitar Rig 6 compare to Amplitube 5 for CPU usage?

I recently started using Guitar Rig 6 as I like its experimental effects since it's the music I usually produce. However, I've noticed that when using some distortions or things like that, my CPU starts to load too much and Ableton starts to crash. I remember a long time ago using Amplitube 5 and something like this didn't happen to me. Is Guitar Rig heavier than Amplitube 5?

My CPU: Core i7 9th Generation
RAM: 16 GB

This is really happening, happening...

That depends very much on what processors and modules you use. You can make GR6 use more CPU than A5 and the other way round.
Anyway, Live should not crash because a plugin uses too much CPU. That seems like a different problem.

I haven't found Guitar Rig 6 especially cpu intensive. The new amps in V6 are more cpu intensive but if you aren't using those, it should be quite low. Even those new ones didn't seem too bad to me. Probably comparable to many Amplitube 5 amps.

They seem extremely similar in performance when doing the same types of processing.
Crashing sounds more like a driver or graphics issue (or any of 1000s of other things). I personally have had some graphics bugs with geetar rig 6. I use both regularly on another system though and there is not a big difference in CPU load or any buggies there.

I found that the new GR6 amp models really taxed my CPU. I was having weird drop outs and Ableton was acting up with only 39 percent usage. A fast workaround was I put an OD/amp/cabinet instance of Overloud TH-U (I don’t have Amplitube) in front of an instance of Guitar Rig, and just using Guitar Rig’s awesome effects. TH-U isn’t a very visually stimulating bit of software, but a really complex chain (that sounds great, by the way) won’t use much more than 8 or 9 percent CPU. Once I threw in Guitar Rig on the back of that (with a couple of Traktor effects and RC reverb), things got stable again. CPU was only up around 20 percent maximum, and stability improved. It was something that I could work with.

I have some IK Jam Points, and I’ve been looking at Amplitube for a while. I can get it for $75. I’m still thinking about it. Sorry, this isn’t to derail an Amplitube thread. Amplitube may very well be easier on CPU than GR6, but you can use both, or GR6 with some other guitar/amp model. Ableton’s own amp/cabinet thing is alright with some tweaking too. I really like Guitar Rig’s granular and time based effects though. I think Helix Native is about the only other plug-in that comes close in potential weirdness, and that is prohibitively expensive.

There's a new update out that supports Apple Silicon natively. Seems pretty snappy to me!

Yeah, there is now a new update again which improves the loading time (my pet peeve with Guitar Rig is loading time). Other than that I think, as an FX rack the CPU usage is very very acceptable. You can also just configure some return channels in your template that are setup with different FX chains in Guitar Rig. Then just send tracks to them in differing amounts for send effects.

I have started a series in which I will pick out some of my favourite modules and functions in Guitar Rig 6 and go through 1-2 modules per episode:

Maybe that will help some of you out that are still on the fence

Which one sounds better?

IMO Amplitube 5 sounds more "realistic", but I suggest you to check the Softube amps, because those sound almost like the real thing.

Even though the computers have advanced so much, they are still not capable of reproducing a keyboard or effects with similar power consumption of a hardware. I recall a software synth I purchased from a company (D) that advertised it as 'the only synth you require'. They were correct. Many patches were overloading the computer and that was the only synth I could use. Dropping another VST will overload the system. VST Programming has a long way to go. Regards.
