i wonder if this function in the preferences is totally borked. whenever i start it, its scanning for ages as well as for nuts...mostly i kill that process after the boot process
while on the other a simple click to set the e.g. vst3 custom fodler off and on again does that job. it even took not much time.

the rescan function is just an upper class resource grabber, who does nuttin

had this issue and found a weird file in my vst/au folder. once removed, scanning took just seconds.

Can you remember what the file was called or what type it was? I'm having the same scanning issue here, I usually have to restart Live after scanning before the new plugins appear in the browser.

no. i checked every file in the folder though and it was some kind of thing related to another plug in that hadn't been updated for a long time. it was a different file type to .vst3 so was easy to spot. it was the only file of its type in the folder. i dragged it to the desktop. did the scan to be sure it was the problem. then i deleted it because didn't want to deal w/it anymore. no problems since then.

my guess is that ableton live itself is the prob. at least its weird that the scan can´t get to an end or doesnt even show new plugins properly, when a simpleoff/on click does it in maybe 2mins at max. with no probs whatsoever.
given that there really isnt anything left which corrupts the process of scanning. i spent a whole night to sober up the whole vst3s on my comp and sort them out. now the /program files/common files/vst3 folder is basically the same state as my custom folder, all plugins are up to date etc. to make the final transition from vst2 to vst3 only plus CLAP (which works fine so far in bitwig).

Thanks for the info. I did find a .ini file in my vst3 folder which probably shouldn't be there, but I don't see how that could interfere with a scan. Will move it and see if it helps. This has been an issue since upgrading to Live 11.

Is there any reason not to just cancel the scan process in preferences when you know nothing has changed in your plugins i.e, no new installations or uninstalls as presumably that is all the scan is looking for.

Same trick I use. I stumbled on it, figuring "why not?", and the off/on has worked every time.

Ableton redid the scanning engine. It works in the background but is super slow. Sometimes you do have to stop and rescan. Annoying!

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask or not...but I'm having an issue where TAL Noisemaker (and ONLY Noisemaker) has just disappeared from the plug-in list in Ableton. I've tried rescanning, I've tried the on/off trick, I've tried restarting and I've even reinstalled Noisemaker... it's just...gone for some reason.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Weird I have the opposite - on my Mac, Ableton is the one DAW that scans plugins on starter way quicker than Bitwig, Logic & Reason.

@shatteredmindofbob - Welcome to KVR! If it's unique to that one plugin, you might have better luck in the KVR TAL Software forum.
