Waveform 12

I don't know, why they had to change the name. Tracktion was perfect, but anyway.
Somehow, I was always attracted by Waveform and own version 11 pro.
Somehow, it had some strange issues with some plugins and regarding stability.
What did change now in version 12.
Is it more trustworthy and how does it handle plugins? More stable, less hanging and stopping to work without any visible reason?
Would it be a good choice to again upgrade and use it.
And by the way, how is the Linux version?
I tend to change to linux so......
Thanks a lot.

Funny how the narrator says "Greatly reduced CPU performance" as an improvement.

I mostly have been using Bitwig and Studio One (on a Win10 machine,) but when I have used Waveform 12, it has seemed quite a bit more stable regarding plug-ins.
My biggest problems regarding plug-ins in Waveform, it must be said, revolved around Waves plug-ins. Most of the rest of my plug-ins were either not an issue at all or were issues in whichever platform I used them in (i.e., the problems were not really Waveform related, per se.) Crashing in Waveform with the Waves plug-ins stopped, however, with Waves version 13 as they changed their copy protection. There have been no more crashes with Waveform and Waves plug-ins since. So, if you use older Waves plug-ins, update them if you use Waveform.

I find version 12 (Mac) far more stable. I couldn't use the old versions because of the constant crashing. Not completely without issues, but it doesn't seem to be the crash-fest it used to be. Actually, in a couple days use, it didn't crash at all. And trust me, I was waiting for it. It would take me a couple of weeks to get over the angst. If I wasn't hooked on Live, I might give it a full-time go.

If you use Linux, it's a much nicer alternative to Reaper and cheaper than Bitwig Studio. Seems like they are trying to copy Studio One, feature wse.

No, I don't think that Waveform is a better alternative than Reaper on Linux. Maybe visually nicer but in terms of functionality and stability nowhere near enough. Waveform was and still is a crash fest on Linux, plugin handling especially on a 4k screen is really bad. I tried every version from version 7 till 12 on Linux and this has never changed so I think this was never addressed in development or not improvable. The new audio engine of Waveform in version 12 makes it even worse.THE INTRANCER wrote: Sat Aug 13, 2022 6:52 pm If you use Linux, it's a much nicer alternative to Reaper and cheaper than Bitwig Studio. As a linux user, my only complaint with Tracktion/Waveform products is the Challenge/Response copy protection. I’d probably buy some of their products if it weren’t for that one thing. I’ve only purchased software using serial number or keyfile for the past 15 years, and I don’t intend to start now. I think a lot of linux users feel the same way. The Reaper team understands linux users. That’s why I support them.
Vendor‑Dependent Copy Protection: Customers lose. Pirates win.
(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

I'm still finding it unreliable on Windows, 15 years after I moved to Reaper due to random crashes. I find that still happens way too often whenever I give it another go.swindus wrote: Sun Aug 14, 2022 10:50 am No, I don't think that Waveform is a better alternative than Reaper on Linux. I am on windows 10 one one machine and windows 11 on another and I find version 12 on both machines way more stable than in previous releases. It handles my plugins a lot better too. So far version 12 has been great on my end.

I am just trying the demo- no crashes or problems at all for me (win 11).
Given its relatively low cost it seems very feature rich and the GUI is quite pleasant...some interesting ideas...a bit Bitwig/Studio One...
I would say this as a great DAW for anyone new to DAWS and looking for a friendly but feature rich low cost option.

I have a late 2015 iMac OS 10.13.6 and have installed Tracktion Waveform 12 Pro free trial version, to see if it works with my set-up before I buy the full package.
The iMac can see the Midas Firewire port but Waveform cannot see the input and output channels.
I am using a Thunderbolt 2 - Firewire 800 adaptor with a Firewire 800 - Firewire 400 lead into my Midas Venice F-32 mixers Firewire 400 port.
I attempted to update the Midas Firewire software, but it made no difference.
However, I have since found a solution from another group and it's a problem with SIP on the iMac and also the blocking of TC Technology software that the FireWire chip set uses when updating the driver.
I will post the fix when completed shortly.

So much depends on the plugins you use (not to mention OS and hardware) so different people will have different experiences, but for me (Win10) version 12 has been more stable. In previous versions it wasn't a bad experience (for me) but I tended to stay away from VST3 versions of plugins if there was also a VST2 version.classic wrote: Fri Aug 12, 2022 11:05 pm Is it more trustworthy and how does it handle plugins? Surely there must be consensus by now...

This. Version 12 has been much more stable for me but I actually avoid vst3 on any DAW I use if there is a vst2 versionavailable. VTS3 has given me a fit in most software at least on my end.pough wrote: Fri Aug 19, 2022 5:05 pmSo much depends on the plugins you use (not to mention OS and hardware) so different people will have different experiences, but for me (Win10) version 12 has been more stable. Now that's what I call an update. They threw everything into it. It's like the greatest hits of DAWs. They took a little bit of Ableton, a lot of S1, and some Cubase and FLStudio. I like that they focused on making a good DAW regardless of where the ideas came from and still added their own unique spin on things. I don't have the bandwidth right now to play with another DAW (I own too many as it is) but I'll keep my eye on Waveform to see where it goes. Last time I played around with Waveform it was pretty buggy and crashy. Hopefully that's been resolved.
