+1. I have the 8020s with a matching sub in our small-ish home studio/office and they are perfect. Very clear and detailed!thecontrolcentre wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2019 9:43 pm Having used Genelec 1029A + 1091A in a smallish room for 10 years with good results, I would reccomend getting the Genelecs ...

I know this is a bit of a necro thread, but anybody in the market for 'budget' speakers really can't ignore the Kali range.
I'm currently running the IN-8 Wave 2's and they are ridiculously good for the money, comparing pretty favourably with £4k's worth of Dynaudio Core 47's I had as well. I had to replace the Core's as they were just too big and powerful for my room, but the Kali's actually have a fairly similar sound profile, only losing out on ultimate power and mid range detail.
But they are 6-7 times less expensive and do pretty much exactly the same job.
The smaller 2 way speakers in the range are equally good.

thats all great, i am positive large speakers can work in a small space if thought out well. but lets be honest, topic refers to a non treated room, and a small one at that, a bed and a carpet and some foam on the walls at best. in a scenario like that, a smaller bass driver might make sense..Ploki wrote: Sat May 28, 2022 10:05 am sorry no. I have a very small control room (20m2 gross without treatment, 13m2 with treatment) and i have two 15" subs on top of 10" Trio11, everything flush mounted.
Severely treated with limp-membrane absorbers so i have room modes tamed down to 20Hz, and SBIRs nonexistent due to flush mounting.
Anyone who mixed here had no issues.

Sure except as demonstrated by Alpha Evo 50 and HS7, a smaller bass driver doesn’t mean meaningfully less bass.astralprojection wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 9:48 amthats all great, i am positive large speakers can work in a small space if thought out well. but lets be honest, topic refers to a non treated room, and a small one at that, a bed and a carpet and some foam on the walls at best. in a scenario like that, a smaller bass driver might make sense..Ploki wrote: Sat May 28, 2022 10:05 am sorry no. no but its less amplitude and less standing waves, they dissipate faster into whatever dampening material is in the room/walls. but i am curious, what are 5" monitors used for, if not for a more focused in your face sound, rather than creating (sometimes pleasant) room resonances that would happen with more amplitude ie larger driver.Ploki wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 10:08 amSure except as demonstrated by Alpha Evo 50 and HS7, a smaller bass driver doesn’t mean meaningfully less bass.astralprojection wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 9:48 amthats all great, i am positive large speakers can work in a small space if thought out well. but lets be honest, topic refers to a non treated room, and a small one at that, a bed and a carpet and some foam on the walls at best. in a scenario like that, a smaller bass driver might make sense..Ploki wrote: Sat May 28, 2022 10:05 am sorry no. Driver diameter itself doesn’t corellate directly to amplitude/SPL at certain frequencies. You have small high excursion drivers that produce a lot of low frequency content.astralprojection wrote: Sun Jun 12, 2022 9:48 am

Your premise about function is a bit flawed based on the assumption that diameter = amplitude and low frequency extension.
Obviously there’s some corellation, but if I exaggerate- a 12” guitar speaker will never produce as much bass as a dedicated 8” sub such as yamaha H8S sub, not in frequency nor in amplitude.
The point of 5” speakers is space constraint where you don’t need as much SPL, also because of smaller drive diameter they can be listened to at closer distances, increasing dry/room sound.
Or when incorporated into a larger surround system where you can sacrificy low end response (for surround and ceiling speakers)
low room modes (sub 120hz) are hard to absorb even with 10cm thick rockwool absorbers, so using 5” vs 7” where distance to speaker and space isnt an issue, is a bit of a fruitless endeavour.
You wont solve much.

moved away from adam a3x + eve ts107 to neumann dsp 80 and I'm so happy with it. never heard so much details in mids and highs. lows are also decent compared to plain a3x.

Pretty sure 5" is not meant to be more in your face, or more focused. Like all speakers they are trying to enable a sweet spot for listening.astralprojection wrote: Sun Jun 12, 2022 9:48 am but i am curious, what are 5" monitors used for, if not for a more focused in your face sound, rather than creating (sometimes pleasant) room resonances that would happen with more amplitude ie larger driver.
5", by the physics, produces a narrower directional band, and thus a smaller sweet spot than a larger speaker, it will also tail off at a higher frequency in the bass, and bass may also be less accurate.
Less bass, in theory, means less bass issues etc, especially in a smaller space.
Less bass, and less issues, can also be achieved by running a bigger speaker at a lower volume. However, you can then run into the Fletcher-munson issue where mids are perceived lower at low volume... So you need a certain volume to limit that effect, which could take you towards standing wave issues in a small space.
I think the advice of get the best speakers you can afford is still a good starting point. Though if a room is Tiny, you may be better off with a good pair ot head phones, a good EQ to correct them, and something like waves nx Ocean Way to give a room feel.

Why on earth should the genre matter when choosing monitors?

I'm no expert or anything but frequency response in the low end perhaps. At least my pair of yamaha HS7 have basically no bass, sounds like a decent radio in that regard. Seems a fairly common complaint with these and i was aware of it when i bought them - and still i was surprised just how hollow the low end was. And for some curious reason the subwoofer that is meant to go with these is almost twice as expensive as the competition. Rarely see people complain about a lack of bass on the KRK rokits, though there seems to be other issues there instead.

It's the same as for why different people like different monitors: Different ears and tastes.
