Has anyone ever had any experience playing an L.A. Sax? Because I really want one of their zebra laquered saxophones... But of course they're like $3000-ish so I would be saving for... quite a while Since my alto sax is a piece of crap I'm saving for a new one, what's a good student line alto saxophone you would recommend? Jupiter sells good horn instruments at reasonable prices, but a decent student alto sax will still cost about $2.5K from most reputable brands. Buying used is an alternative to lower the cost.

I'll second the Yamaha recommendation. I have a YAS-26 (not sure what that translates to in today's model numbers) - bought it six years ago and it's solid, good intonation. I also have a Yamaha YTS-52 tenor that I've had for over 20 years and it similarly very solid.

Make sure you know what you're planning to use it for.
If you're going to be using it primarily for band marching (or learning), get a cheap used one at a local dealer -- it will get banged up.
If you're mainly going to be playing in concert/jazz band, get a nicer one.
Never hurts to have both types anyway if it's something you or someone in your family is going to use a lot.

Nah. The Yamaha YAS-280 is just a little over half that. But yeah buying used (if you're careful) you can save a ton.
