When it comes to VA, there's a lot of grey area with oscs. I mean I think it's not that weird to call an oscar a VA since it has digital waveforms, and surely the imposcar is, being a copy of the oscar. And then all those digital synths like viruses, despite having wavetable capability, we've generally called VA. I think it's generally that these emulate an analog type signal path, which Bazille does, although with very digital oscs.

So what is digital and what is analog ?
All soft synths are digital, but it doesn't matter ..
We get so caught up in names and categories and terminologies and then try to explain it all away with semantics and irrelevant discussion...
What is important is the music and the "sound"...
We can get there in so many different ways and the tools we use are just that...
Different tools that we employ to achieve an end result..
Strip away the boundaries and boxes that we create for ourselves in our minds and just embrace the binary code in whatever form it presents itself

No auto tune...

Digital: Needs 0's and 1's to make a sound.
Analog: Goes to 11.
That's the difference, right there.

Well the OP (long gone) was asking specifically about VA synth recommendations. Then the KVR floodgates opened with everybody's favorite synth, LOL.

Well it was was only two days ago and I have been busy………FWIW I posted this:zzz00m wrote: Tue Aug 30, 2022 8:07 pm Well the OP (long gone) was asking specifically about VA synth recommendations. Then the KVR floodgates opened with everybody's favorite synth, LOL.![]()
SHall1000 wrote: Sun Aug 28, 2022 10:45 pm I think my original post was the result of demoing Cherry’s ELKA Synthex emulation and thinking what is this doing/adding that all the other 70/80s analogue emulations (complete with wooden end cheeks) aren’t already providing given they all have the same basic architecture. Sure I can hear differences in sonic character when I compare them directly but I am not sure I miss the others when I am using any one of them.
Surely one of the non emulations following the same architecture could cover the same sort of ground and perhaps be more versatile with a wider sonic spectrum, but maybe they just bring their own limitations a unique sonic footprint.
Reading the responses here has made me realise that maybe the old standard subtractive architecture might not be necessary to get an old school analogue sound and I should explore other synthesis options and understand sound design better.
Anyway the inevitable consequence of asking the question is that after watching some Dune 3 tutorials I have GAS and will probably end up buying yet another synth.

Well, Bazille has Saw, Square and Sine waves. And it has analog modeled filters, plus Env's and LFO's. It can be used as a subtractive synth.zzz00m wrote: Tue Aug 30, 2022 7:06 pm That's an interesting perspective! But I personally draw the line for VA as at least making an attempt at subtractive synthesis by generating a basic analog waveform that is obviously digitally generated/modeled in a soft synth, such as saw, square, sine, etc.
But the thing is... Analog is not only subtractive. Buchla is analog but not considered subtractive but rather 'West Coast' synthesis. Bazille's Osc's are kinda like the Buchla Complex Osc, or other current Eurorack Complex Analog Osc's. Bazille's Osc's have Linear 'thru-zero' FM, can modulate each other and have a kind of wavefolding.
The Multiples, Rectifiers, Inverters, etc. all have their roots in analog modular. Plus the Bazille Sequencer is more like an analog sequencer than what is typically found in a digital synth.
So Bazille can be seen as a combination of east and west coast synthesis. That's virtual analog!
