I make no excuses for sharing so awesome a soundtrack, but this sound, at the timestamp (its meant to be 52 seconds but it's not linking properly), eludes me. Some type of 60's organ sound. Is it something like a Continental or Farfisa through a tremolo or rotary speaker?

Thanks

Post

At that timestamp I hear something going through a phaser at highest resonance sweeping the resonance frequency at highest modulation. The phaser washing effect is so strong, it does not matter anymore what exactly was the original sound.

Is that what you meant?

you mean 0:53 ?

the
rightclick (control-click) and select "copy video URL at current time"
does seem to NOT work here with the embedded YT urls...
(just tried it..)

imho, that's not an organ but a synth

It sounds like a harpsichord, but i doubt it is. So it's more like some psychedelic Doors-esque sound. What synth do you think it is?

A prophet 5

(Because any successful soundtrack composer who was going to buy a polysynth in 1980 would have one.)

It does have that John Carpenter vibe.

I would never have thought that sound a p5 sound at all

Could be a D50…

Post

So it's not about the phazered sound? Thanks for confirming that.
I did hear a synth at the same time mark. The sound is not that special if you ask me.

Conclusion: it's a synth and not an organ. Could be any poly-synth from that period.

Yeah, the composer obviously travelled forward in time 7 years to buy one.

People, this is a 1980 film. The synths were analog.

Ah, Roland stole that sound for the D50…
And why not use it…?

People used to layer like crazy. That's why the D-50 was invented, so you didn't need to have both a DX7 and Jupiter/JX/whatever.

Resist. Must resist making a comment about prodigious organs...

Aw f**k it! :dog: I couldn't resist.

Listened to the sound again, it reminds me of the Yamaha CS-80, used on countless albums of that era.
