AMD today announced its Ryzen 7000 series of consumer desktop processors. Based on the new AM5 platform and the new Zen 4 architecture, these new CPUs introduce significant improvement in performance over previous generation Ryzen 5000 series as well as introducing cutting edge features like DDR5 and PCIe Gen 5.

it seems promising. lets see what happens without all the optimized shizzles at the end of the day. 50% better performance per watt, according to hardware unboxed cahnnels news, sounds good tho, but it still remains in the 105/170 tdp area. not exactly a direct competition to apples new tech. we have to wait for the apu and the laptop cpu variants - and if they have that 50% too^^.

Because they are dumb.

Intel made a dumb decision to introduce e-cores. They are not energy efficient at all. They are space efficient. Approximately they use 1/4 of big core. Because they are so lightweight, they can pack more FMA (floating point multiply-add arithmetic) units into same space. For straightforward code that is FMA-bound, such as rendering this is a big win.

For everything else they are not great.

And by doing such a move they introduce a lot of disadvantages.

For pro-audio, having e-cores in the mix can hurt low latency performance. If anything time-critial goes on e-core, that is a potential glitch.

For games, e-cores introduce frame time variance, which manifest as stutters.

Of course there things can and should be mitigated by smart scheduler, but it is mostly a guessing game.

What is more depressing, is that programmers now need to deal with that mess. Should you optimize your program for e-core or for p-core? Because you can't do both at the same time. And for things that have limited parallelism (such as games), just having an e-core that can slow everything down is not nice.

They also cut down AVX-512 which is actually present in p-cores. Sometimes you can enable it. But guess what - because e-cores were a last moment decision they decided to disable AVX-512 on the whole generation. That will slow down the adoption of the instruction set by the programmers. Why would I bother writing an AVX-512 code when the latest processor doesn't support it. That alone maybe a nail on the coffin for AVX-512.

And you know what's funny? GPUs absolutely destroy CPUs in rendering.

Majority of the people would rather have a 10-core i12900k that is cooler and a little bit faster in single-thread than having these stupid e-cores that are only good in rendering.
