So I've been on a musical break for about a year. I bought my new laptop last year and used it briefly with Ableton Live 10 and Windows 10 and it ran things fairly well.

My laptop has an i7-10510U CPU with 4 cores and 8 threads, 1.80 GHz and 8 gb of ddr4 ram.

I upgraded to Windows 11 and Ableton Live 11 and now I feel like simple plugins and patches eat up so much of my CPU and it honestly runs like shit. Wondering if there's anything I can do to improve performance.

Imo, 1.80 Ghz laptop is very light for synth plugins, and third party vst effects.
I’m at 2.6 Ghz on a laptop and have problems with lot of Vital polyphonic synth presets, and Arturia FX reverbs (for example).

- External soundcard
- Move up Asio latency to 512/1024 at least
- Check power saving options are not dynamically changing CPU speed

There are tweaks and tools here regarding latency on a laptop, i do not know them.

What latency settings are you using? Maybe you need to make your buffer a bit bigger, at least to see if that makes things better. If you've upgraded your host, it may not have retained your old settings.

I had to drop my samples to 256 because I was getting really bad latency on my recordings.

Should I maybe look at overclocking my CPU?

First check the dpc latency. You could suffer from a bad driver for wifi or gpu hogging the bus snd getting in the way.
Resplendence has a utility for that, and there are others. I don't keep track, some are not compatible with win11. Google "dpc latency checkee"

Certainly drop your latency as low as possible when recording live - and use as few plugins as possible. But when you are processing and mixing - using more plugins - you'll likely want to increase your buffer size.

EDIT: Scratch what I said about processing speed if it's faster than you mentioned in the OP.

Bear with me as I'm not very knowledgeable but I have a question. My CPU says i7-10510U at 1.8 Ghz but when I check performance it says that the base speed is 2.30 GHz and the current speed is actually around 4.5 GHz.

@BertKoor I got a passing grade. Highest reported routine was ACPI driver.

Overclocking produces a lot of heat and laptop doesn't have good cooling.
The laptop's BIOS will likely not have the overclocking options.
You can try some tweaks, but they might not be good for your laptop battery.

Set the Power Plan like this

Use the Windows power plan settings explorer utility to unselect "Processor idle demote/promote threshold"

To save energy can try with Balanced(recommended) instead of Ultimate, but do the tweaks.

Just had a look at the stats and it seems as though you have a perfectly substantial processor so it will all be about how you optimise your system to use that power. Power saving options, as Pictus mentioned, will be a start: Noting that laptops often switch between settings depending on whether they are plugged in or not - This is easy enough to change if required.

Definitely search Google for optimising your system.

My computer doesn't run plugins as well I'd like.
