Hello all. I am considering buying this synth, so i have red the manual as i always do. but even after reading the manual i couldnt figure out how many FX the synth can use simultaneously.

I would like to make a minor stab with a phaser + distortion + delay + reverb. would that be possible ?

It has two parts and, according to Nick Batt, each part can have a total of 2 effects: (1) reverb and (2) selection between Chorus I, Chorus II, or one of the other effects buried in the menu (see 11:20).

According to the Roland FAQ, "The JX-08 effect settings can be configured separately for each part. The reverb settings are common to both part A and B. Only the send amount can be adjusted individually for each part."

So, it looks like the answer to your question is that you could possibly combine two parts into a multi-layer and get up to 3 different effects between them (one effect per layer and a shared reverb/sends), but you can't put four effects on a single layer. DISCLAIMER: I've never owned a JX-08, so take that for what it's worth.

Thanks for the info. Damn. I guess it s not this time yet that i am making dub techno with a boutique :/ we are on 2022 and it seems that i still need a virus ti to use more than four fx per patch.
Edit : or a deepmind12. Godbless for those amazing fx.

I don't understand, why you want to depend completely on built-in effects?

There are multi-effect units that can put this icing on the cake. Zoom has a very affordable pedal for instance.

I can explain. I play live. When i do a program change on a synth i want it to have all the fxs that make up the sound of the instrument . Having separated fx makes everything a lot more complicated since i have to send program changes to the synths and to the fx. I guess most people dont play live so they dont care about synths with integrated FXs.

Never heard of MIDI? The synth sends program change, the fx unit switches as well.

Why can't you use midi live? It's easy to put program changes into a sequencer or whatever so your synth and FX all change together. Or are you ONLY playing live with no midi at all? That makes sense, but seems unlikely...

Sounds like a big ask for 4 FX, so the idea of an FX unit makes sense - can't think of that many hw synths that do that. Even the Korg ones only have 3. I doubt there are many real budget ones that do it.

That's the idea indeed. With each program change you manually do on the synth, the fx unit follows that. Because the synth sends program change messages and the fx unit understands them. You only need a 5-pin DIN cable between the two. No sequencer, nothing else required.

Some effects units even have elaborate program change mapping:
if incoming program = 1, then my patch is 15
if incoming program = 2, then my patch is 15 as well
if incoming program = 3, then my patch is 12
etc etc.

Too bad you don't understand the concept. Your loss.

Modal’s Argon and Cobalt synths have 3 effects slots and the chains can be saved as presets separate to the patches (as well as the sequences). Not sure if that helps the OP but it’s not something I have seen on many HW synths.
