Where are the examples???????melomood wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 11:39 am Musicians and songwriters do not start and end with any particular decade. There are plenty of good ones still around. If you don't know where to look, too bad you
Who can sing on a level of Marvin Gaye, Prince or
Freddy Mercury and is or might be successful over decades?
Who can perform piano and sing at the same time like
Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Elton John or Prince,
who even made a concert tour on piano only
and could perform with a completely different
setup of his songs every evening in one month?
I would really like to get some examples of today's artists, but...?

Amusing that people thing Imagine (Lennon) is good songwriting, rather than the nondescript bland beige out-of-ideas piece of music that it is. I suppose the simplicity of musical structure is supposed to express innocence and purity of intention, but IMO the sentiment is indulgent. Jealous Guy has some depth.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

The majority thinks so, but the majority is not automatically right.chagzuki wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 11:50 am Amusing that people thing Imagine (Lennon) is good songwriting, rather than the nondescript bland beige out-of-ideas piece of music that it is. But it's also my opinion that Imagine is great songwriting by
a dreamer describing visions that will never come true,
cuz " homo homini lupus".

Prince's music IMO is also appalling, turgid.
Queen and Freddy Mercury were really musicians, a different league. A rare thing in pop/popular music. Bowie was also, briefly, at the start of his career, and then started churning out garbage, occasionally finding depth here and there.

If nobody does it anymore, it’s because nobody cares anymore. Simple as that.Leo1999 wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 11:42 am WTF is the only answer?! Haha
I didn't expect more truly speaking
Why are there no songs like the one you’re reffering to today ? Because they belong to the past. Now, people want something else.
Or do you think the whole humanity suddenly stopped being good at music ?
Or maybe you believe somebody is trying to stop them secretly from releasing good old rock ’n roll ?!?
Or maybe there’s some kind of plot ?
New musicians make something different, maybe because what’s already been made has no need to be made again, maybe because they’re looking for creativity, maybe because they know nobody will listen to something that’s out of time, maybe simply because that’s what they want to do, well anyway what you’re saying is absolutely mindblowing.
Nowadays, people listen to different things, deal with it.
What you think is marvelous may sound meh to newer generations.
That’s how it always worked.
Most artists I listen to released their songs in the past ten years, and most of the artists you quoted were what my father listened to, and I found it boring and unimpressive. You’re saying it like they’re unmatched. For sure they’re not. Yes, in your heart they are, and I respect that, but believe me some people don’t give a s#it about them.
To some people, music is always improving. I think music has simply renewed itself all the time. There is no decline in any way. Simply our own tastes.

any examples, what are you afraid of?
When I write I like Visions by Stevie Wonder, I do not expect someone
to write the same or even similar song, but on a similar inspiring and
pleasant level in the box or however.
There must be a reason why so many songs of the 80s are re-made with
a modern version, why not creating new good songs?
The songs are being massaged to death today, just to sound super clean and loud. Ok, I see, music is about super sound today, well...
I prefer a good song with lots of hum and gear noice instead
and a voice not massaged by Autotune, a pure and soulful voice

TBH, I rather see that as an issue of certain musical genres being fresh and unexplored, and becoming professional and "boring" over time.Leo1999 wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 11:42 amWhere are the examples???????melomood wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 11:39 am Musicians and songwriters do not start and end with any particular decade. My dad listens to a lot of Jazz, and, he says that everything from the last 30 or 40 years is simply completely boring and lifeless to him.
There is no doubt in my mind though that nowadays, there's a lot of talent. The question is rather what is made of that talent. Can't blame a pop singer for shitty productions when he/she is not responsible for the music, or even the lyrics.

OK, one example if you really want one. I really love Sia.
Maybe you know this song, maybe you don’t.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cxjvTXo9WWM
That’s the best example of a modern artist that feels complete to me.
I really think Stevie Wonder wrote good songs, I like them, but they’re kinda painful to listen to, the sound feels empty to me, no power, no body, and those awful synths...
You see ? Tastes...

I listened to it, never heard it before, but it was like I have already heard
something similar several times;
voice is good, but ,verse, refrain, verse, 4x refrain a bit boring to me and mix to clean without dynamics and energy and power, just what
you wrote about Stevie Wonder haha
I mean, his singing and keyboard playing is so full of dynamic power imo,
but ok, tastes are different and that's good, thanks for sharing

I also think this one is really excellent if you’re interested (Sia also, less "boring") :Leo1999 wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 12:20 pmDJErmac wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 12:11 pm OK, one example if you really want one. I really love Sia.

No problem for me anyway my friend ! My wife and I listen to totally different genres and I love asking her what she perceives in every song, why she likes it... and also why she dislikes some of the songs I love. That’s how I understand better how people can react to different things, this helps me a lot with music making.
We are all be free to love what we love, simple as that. What is the reference ? Mozart ? Beethoven ? Jimi Hendrix ? David Bowie ?... Where does it end ??

I am pretty sure after a special experience many years ago,
that the most talented musicians are not the ones
who were promoted and supported by major labels back in the day or
today by social media, there are musicians who don't care
about fame and I met the best singers, percussionist, small bands
and guitarists on a trip in Spain Andalucia separately, they didn't care
about followers on YouTube etc
So I think there are lots of musicians the world will not get to know,
they just enjoy playing for or with their friends in their small village

Honestly, I think back in the 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s, there was less for young folks to do, fewer avenues for entertainment. And music was a less-charted territory, so it made a lot of sense for young people looking for excitement to get together and try to elevate their experience via music.
There are also big macro-economic factors that now make the cost of space and living prohibitively expensive (to do with debt-cycles)... there's less economic freedom now, and that makes band rehearsal and recording very difficult.
I tend to think moving into the 90s the deeper musicianship went into pushing the boundaries in metal and electronic stuff.
And now the world is a different place, with a permanent repository of everything that ever happened, and people are no longer bounded by physical location. There's not the same need for the types of tribal identification that music used to facilitate.
