Which CPU ?

Hey Guys,

need some help to choose my new CPU

I hesitate between 2 CPU, the 5700G (8 Cores) and 5950X (16C)
The 5700G looks nice with its integrate GPU and a TDP of 65W only..
but is it enough to make serious projects ? ..

lets say 16 VSTi tracks with hungry VSTi like Diva, Repro, Pigment...+ 10 audio tracks (drums, voices, SFX) ? + effects on each tracks EQ (fabfilter), Compressor (Pro-c2 or or Presswerk) , delay & reverb ((Valhalla)...

or should I go for the 5950X with any hesitation (exept the price and TDP) + a light GPU ?

PS: the upcoming new high end AMD CPU seem better for audio prod but too much W hungry..

The 5700G sacrifices cache to provide onboard graphics, which is why I recently purchased a 5700X. TDP is the same for both processors though it will likely be slightly higher in use so you'll want to have some headroom in your PSU - which is wise to do anyway.

Yet to build though as I'm still waiting for the M.2 SSD that I'm going to use for my OS.

As far as additional cores, it depends on your DAW and your uses. For me, the TDP of Ryzen 9s puts me off. I generally like to build silent PCs and heating would become an issue as I favour air cooling with large heat sinks over water cooling.

The 5700G is 3.80Ghz, the 5700X 3.40Ghz so I thought the 5700G was better in perf... what GPU did you add ? (I found a silent GT 1030 which should be enough as I don't play games)

so the 5950X TDP (105W) will make the PC noisy ? even with quality CPU cooler like the dark rock pro 4 or similar?

I agree with the Ryzen 9 with TDP of 170W

TDP is a marketing lies these days. They show whatever number they want and then let the cpu boost above it anyway. You can tweak wattage limits in BIOS if that's the problem.

It's not like is will always be hot. It will be only be hot under full load. The kind of load that weaker CPU couldn't handle anyway.

Besides, do you really need to have that many tracks active all the time?

If you really want to throw some cash, maybe it's worth waiting 3-5 months or so for the new platform. Rumours say it's very good, no stupid e-cores and good single thread boost.

Dark Rock Pro will be fine for cooling. Sorry I was thinking all the Ryzen 9s were higher. The 105W TDP of the 5950X is more like that of my old 1700X, which was kept nice and cool around and sometimes under 40C with a simple Pure Rock.

To start with I'm going to use the same cooler as the 5700X only has 65W TDP, as you say, and I'm usually running my old 1700X at 2.2GHz - I'll probably also run the 5700X slower. Only need more juice when mixing or working on 3D graphics - whereas most of my time is spent editing audio and processing on individual channels for sound design. I rarely need to jack up the clock in Reaper.

Planning on purchasing a Scythe Fuma 2 for cooling when I update my RAM - also using old RAM from last build.

Also going to continue using my old Palit KalmX for a graphics card until their new range is released and then I might consider a new one for working with Blender.

with the inflation, the decrease of the € ... waiting 3-5 months, not sure it's a good idea... the prices probably will increase a lot... (look at the Moog)
Also the new AMD CPU seem to consume a lot of more Watt... of course we need some tests.

ok so the 5950x will be ok as a silent system... should be good enough for my audio projects set up... and my silent GPU choice will be the same for both 5950 & 5700...

what a shame your 5700x computer is not ready...you could tell me if is good enough for my kind of music projects.

The new AMD CPUs are more power efficient.
Some tweaks like limiting the maximum wattage and it will be silent and still fast.
The good part is that they also have a good built-in GPU.

Possibly not for your musical projects. But indeed, my M.2 is currently somewhere in the Netherlands but should arrive by Wednesday. I'm definitely expecting for it to be more than fine for my own uses.

I also have similar economic concerns so I decided not to wait until Black Friday for all parts. If things stay the same or improve, however, then I'm hoping to be able to sell what I have for enough to make the new build cost me just under £100 - and that should see me through at least another five years.

The 5900X is a better chip for music than the 5950X , because its single core speed it a bit higher.

And it draws less power.

Yes 5900x is a better choice, there are some issue as well with Windows Audio an more as 24 threads..

If going to the 5950x, the option might be to diable SMT an run only with 16 full cores..

I wait fir AM5 to replace my Intel 8086 with 6 cores, as with heavy vst proxessing i run as well in limits.

Just buy the cheaper one. 8 modern cores is more than enough for reasonable use cases. And if that's not enough you can always freeze tracks. And you can resell if you find that you really need that extra cpu power.

More seriously...I was exactly thinking the same as you...but now the 5900X could be the winner ... I miss the discount when it was about 369€...

The new CPU prices are CRAZY here in europe compared to the official US prices...some shops already sell them (probably pre-sale)...I hope it will not be the real prices on september 27...

as a SERIOUS producer, i wouldnt even touch the boost functionality of a cpu. straight disable it. go with the basic speed.
if theres any problem with cpu, just a simple trick: bounce the track.
tdp stable, no cpu pumping and throttling means more stable audio data flow.
the new 7k amd ryzen btw are even MORE efficient in terms of wattage using than anything before amd released, they maybe slightly higher in overall tdp, but for sure deliver more per watt than ever before.

i use a 3400g with a gfx card and with the usual 6-8 tracks with each one isntrument and maybe up to 6 or 7 fx running, plus the master with 3-4.
thats almost ther end of the road for this apu.
a 5700g should be easily topping this by the triple amount. i would then go with the apu until i get a good gfx card for maybe less than 200bucks.

i would even wait for the 7k ryzen apus tbh^^. intel will release its new stuff soon and pricewar will begin^^
